St. Thomas, Central - Finish 1, 2!

Beefs
JACKSONVILLE – St. Thomas Aquinas finished what it started two years ago, by capturing the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Top 25 trophy for the second time in three years.

The Raiders were a unanimous #1, after sharing the first place vote distribution all season long with Manatee (a 31-7 semi-final victory for the Raiders) and Cocoa (the 2A champion). St. Thomas Aquinas started the pre-season Top 25 as the #8 ranked team and quickly moved to #1 after two weeks and stayed there the remainder of the season.

Miami Central, the pre-season #1 team, finished #2 by walloping previous #6 Dr. Phillips 42-27 in the class 6A finals. The Rockets edged out Cocoa (2A) by one point. The Tigers of Cocoa have the state’s longest winning streak at 38 straight after a come-from-behind victory over Glades Central, 14-13 in the 2A state championship game. Tampa Jefferson (3A champion) moved up four spots to #4 after beating #15 Miami Norland 44-34 in the 3A championship game.

Dr. Phillips and Armwood (4A, previously ranked #3) finished tied for fifth, with both teams losing in the state championship game.

Four top-10 ranked teams fell in the state semi-finals, including #10 Dwyer (ranked fifth) to #5 Armwood (ranked third) 22-20, #11 Manatee (ranked #2) to St. Thomas Aquinas, #12 St. Augustine (ranked ninth, to #4 Jefferson) and #13 Lakeland (ranked #9) to #7 Plant.
Tallahassee Lincoln jumped 13 spots to #9 after an upset win over Armwood. The Trojans were 3-4 at one point in the season before an eight game winning streak put them as the 4A champions. Ocala Trinity Catholic used its three-overtime victory over University School of Davie (ranked #16) to move up three spots to #8.

Cypress Bay entered the final poll after nearly beating Miami Central in the state semi-finals, before falling 30-27. The Lightning finished 11-3 and ranked #23.
