Over the past year, colleges and universities across the country have followed LaSalle quarterback Rafi Montalvo with plenty of interest.
On Sunday, the impressive run/pass threat landed at the one place many called the “best fit” for the 6-0, 195-pounder - the U.S. Naval Academy.
This chance of a lifetime was something that appealed to Montalvo and his family, who had been active in the entire recruiting process.
One of the most productive quarterbacks in South Florida, Montalvo’s appointment to a school, program and lifestyle was truly the perfect fit.
“Everything about the Naval Academy was tremendous,” Montalvo said. “Words cannot explain how excited I am to get there.”
With Navy starting to look toward this region of the country more and more, Montalvo jumped on the radar screen last spring, when coaches from several schools began to see his arm strength, foot speed and leadership on the field.
On his visit to Annapolis, Montalvo had the chance to meet former St. Thomas Aquinas All-State linebacker Vinny Mauro, who was injured this past year during his freshman season. He also spoke with quarterback Ricky Dobbs, who not only lifted the football program to another level, but also has lofty career goals like being the President of the United States - down the road.
“Just to listen to people who have gone through the experience was great to hear,” Montalvo said. “This is a huge honor!”
