American Patriots have two players airlifted during game vs. Braddock with head injuries

Two high school football players from American High were airlifted to the Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center Thursday night after suffering head injuries during a game against Braddock at Tropical Park.

Athletic director Marcus Gabriel said senior defensive backs Larry Hope, a player verbally committed to the University of Miami, and Roderick Carter were the two injured players. He said he believed neither injury was life-threating and the players were airlifted because the injuries were to their heads. Gabriel said both players were accompanied by their parents.

Hope was airlifted first with what Gabriel described as a deep, six-inch gash that ran from the left side of his face to back of his head.

"It happened in the beginning of the second quarter," Gabriel said. "I didn't see exactly what happened, but he ended up making the tackle without his helmet and unfortunately he was cut by another players helmet. There was a lot of blood. The cut looked like a Nike Swoosh. He was alert, calling for his dad, just gashed up pretty good."

Gabriel said Carter was hurt with 8:08 to play in the fourth quarter. After making a tackle, Gabriel said Carter fell back down to the ground and was complaining of neck pain. But according to Gabriel, Carter was moving both his arms and his legs.

"Roderick was able to push off with both hands and his legs," Gabriel said. "He was complaining about chest and neck pains. But they wanted to take him for precautionary reasons."

American led 14-0 when Hope was injured. Gabriel said officials decided to call the game after Carter's injury. Braddock was leading 40-21.

"After Larry left, our team just went down and went completely flat," Gabriel said. "Braddock kept playing football and we weren't in the game. We decided to call the game so nobody else would get hurt."

Clayton, Simon and Irvin on radio

Maroonefronters1
As we approach the third week of the high school football season, the Maroone High School Gridiron Report will get into high gear this Tuesday night from 9-10 on WQAM (560 AM).

Joining Larry Blustein on this week's show are South Dade standout running back Torry Clayton, Flanagan head coach Don Simon and Miami Westminster Christian head coach Sedrick Irvin.

RUNNING TO THE TOP
Over the past three years, south Florida has had some exceptional football talent. One of those players who has been jumping into the spotlight - since his sophomore season - is Clayton, who has proven that he is indeed one of the elite backs in the state.

The 5-11, 200-pounder continues to lead his team, and colleges across the country have certainly taken notice of this quality football talent.

With schools such as UCF, Memphis, Ball State and several other big time programs watching, there is little doubt that Clayton will remain one of the elite backs around.

South Dade will play host to Miami Dr. Krop on Thursday night.

FALCONS FLYING HIGH
One of the most impressive football programs in the state of Florida each year will get a visit this Friday night from a team that has made a huge statement in the first two games of the year.

When Coach Simon and his Falcons head up to play Lakeland this week, this team will have a few surprises for the powerful Dreadnaughts.

Under Simon, a former Hialeah American standout, Flanagan has soared to great heights with quality talent, tremendous coaching and the belief they can compete with district foes Cypress Bay and Miramar.

The Falcons feature Notre Dame-bound receiver Justin Ferguson.

IRVIN IS BACK
One of the top football prospects in Miami-Dade County history, Irvin came back to coaching locally after a successful playing career at Michigan State and in the NFL as well as coaching stops at Gulliver Prep, Alabama and memphis University.

What Irvin has done with the Warriors since taking over is teach a number of the quality athletes things that will certainly help them, and heading into Friday's district showdown at home against Chaminade-Madonna, senior quarterback David Thompson, who is headed to the University of Miami, is one of the players everyone will be watching.

Irvin's program at Westminster also includes 2015 prospect, Tim Irvin, who is a youth football legend, and the nephew of the head coach!

You can catch the show on www.wqam.com or archived via the internet at http://sfhighschoolsports.com.

Florida High School Football

FORECAST FOR WEEK 2

Joe Pinkos’ Power Ratings are calculated by a formula based on strength of opposition and margin of victory with greater weight given to recent games. The forecasted margin of victory for each game is determined by subtracting the power rating of the lower-rated team from the power rating of its higher-rated opponent.

Game forecasts are sorted by classification of favorite and listed alphabetically. The underdog’s classification is noted for inter-classification games.

Shashaty, Bertani and Guadolo on radio

Maroonefronters1
After an exciting first week of the 2011 high school football season, he Maroone Gridiron High School Report continues on Tuesday night from 9-10 on WQAM (560 AM).

Larry Blustein welcomes in Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian record-setting quarterback Javan Shashaty, North Miami Beach head coach Jeff Bertani and Cypress Bay head coach Mark Guandolo.

STRONG PERFORMANCE
After a tough first quarter of the opening game of the season against Highlands Christian, Shashaty and his teammates rebounded in a major way.

One of the all-time leading passers in the state of Florida, the first game of his senior season will certainly set he tone as the 6-1, 175-pounder threw for a Broward County single game record of 537 yards and 8 touchdown passes.

With all the quarterbacks in south Florida getting much of the attention, this is the one signal caller that needs to be followed each week as we continue to move in on history!

BUILDING THE CHARGERS
An opening night loss to traditional power Northwestern will not shake Bertani and his young Chargers.

In that setback to the Bulls, he found out plenty about a team that lost several key players from last year. There is plenty o talent on NMB this season. Look for a number of very young players to take the lead role.

The Chargers will travel to Key West on Friday for another major challenge. NMB’s schedule is easily one of the toughest in the state.

NOT LOOKING AHEAD
It would have been easy for Coach Guandolo and his players to look ahead to Week 2 - before playing the opening game of the season against Deerfield Beach.

Although there were a number of mistakes made, they talent the Lightning has on board certainly gave them enough last week to beat an improving Bucks’ squad.

There were some good things that came out of the game, and now, the attention shifts to this Friday night and a date with national powerhouse, St. Thomas.

The Raiders beat Cypress Bay handily last year, but it was that loss that appeared to turn things around.

You can listen to Tuesday night's show live on www.wqam.com or through the extensive archives on the popular sfhighschoolsports.com website.
