Caffey, Hudge and Heidelberg on radio

Maroonefronters1
The Maroone High School Gridiron Report gets back into the playoff swing this Wednesday night with an impressive show on WQAM (560 AM).

Larry Blustein will talk third round playoffs with Booker T. Washington linebacker Kevon Caffey, Miramar quarterback Cameron Hudge and Norland head coach Daryle Heidelburg from 9-10 p.m.

TORNADOES SWIRLING
Over the past three years, Booker T. Washington has been setting the table for a run that would be loaded with talent and great coaching.

With the return of Tim "Ice" Harris as head coach, things improved dramatically this year. As early as spring, many could tell that this was a team of the future - and present.

With so many young players making major contributions this year, as the 11-1 Tornadoes get set to host three-time defending state champion Cocoa on Friday night at Curtis Park, there is a senior who has watched all of this evolve the past few years.

Kevin Caffey is a 5-9, 185 pound linebacker on a defense that is so gifted, sophomores and juniors are already being nationally recruited and viewed by college coaches across the nation.

What Caffey has provided this season is a mature, experienced player who patrols the defense. While he may not be 6-3, 230 or run a blazing 40, this is an athlete who males plays.

DOUBTERS NO MORE
After Geno Smith left Miramar, and Ryan Williams had an impressive one-year run toward a state title, many felt that there was no way the Patriots would able to find another quarterback who could move the offense and control the game with a huge line and a top-flight receiving corps.

After looking at several prospects, the one that many never gave a second thought, would not only emerge with the job, but also gain the respect and admiration of every player and coach on the team. Hudge has not only passed his way into the hearts of fans all over Broward County, but he has proven to be one of South Florida's best.

As the unbeaten (11-0) Patriots get ready to host Palm Beach Gardens on Friday, it will be Hudge, directing an offense that has been very tough to stop. Finally, the respect he truly deserves for monumental wins against Norland (pre-season), St. Thomas Aquinas and Cypress Bay twice.

LOOKING FOR ANOTHER SHOT
Last year, Norland surprised everyone when they reached the state championship game, losing to Tampa Jefferson. While many predicted the Vikings to lose to Jefferson, it was the way they lost that has served as motivation for this gifted program.

What Coach Heidelburg learned from that loss to Jefferson is that if you start slow against great teams, it will be tougher to come back. Finishing games has been a priority for the Vikings who have scored points at a record pace.

When he came back to his alma mater three years ago, after turning Edison around, Heidelburg knew the formula to winning was keeping his kids home, and as they head toward an unbeaten showdown at Glades Central on Friday night, mission accomplished, so far!

CHECKING OUT THE YOUTH FB ACTION
As he does every week, Jonah Woullard from Generation Nexxt stops by to take a look at the top teams and players.

This week, we take a look back at the playoffs and what's ahead over the next few weeks.

Cogswell, Marguriet and Tunsil on radio

Maroonefronters1
It's all about the playoffs this Wednesday night on the Maroone High School Gridiron Report.

As the state football playoffs get under way, Larry Blustein will welcome in a group that will get things going this week with some tough games.

From 9-10 p.m. on WQAM (560 AM), American Heritage Plantation junior quarterback Tyler Cogswell, Coral Springs Taravella head coach Dan Marguriet and Hialeah Champagnat Catholic head coach Mike Tunsil will look at the first round of the playoffs.

WHAT A MAJOR SURPRISE
When Jeff Dellenbach came in to take over things at American Heritage this year, he made it clear that competition would be a major factor in making this team better.

Even with the loss of star sophomore running back Sony Michel, athletes such as Cogswell have found a way to lift the program up, winning 9 of 10 games and capturing a district title while showcasing his leaderships and a tremendous throwing arm.

Cogswell, who has been among the best passers in South Florida this season, guides his team into Friday night's game at home against Miami Jackson.

GETTING IT DONE - AGAIN!
While there are many coaches who continue to get praise for the jobs they do when it comes to coaching and teaching young players, there are few who have done it for as long and as good as Marguriet.

No matter where he's been in the past three decades, Marguriet has been known as a motivator who gets the most from his players, and with this year's Trojans winning a district title, everyone realizes this could be a team that can cause some problems in the playoffs.

With the experience of coaching big games under his belt, Marguriet and his team will welcome in Cypress Bay on Friday night at 7:30 at Coral Springs Stadium.

FIRST PLAYOFF APPEARANCE
There is nobody who has watched more football and has groomed more athletes than Tunsil, who started the program at Champagnat Catholic last year - with some very young and talented players. But when he and his team square off with Glades Day in Belle Glade, it will be uncharted waters for the coach.

For the first time in school history, Champagnat gets the chance to participate in post season play, and while the opportunity will be rewarding, this will be a game that this team will long remember.

The task at hand will be to slow down Florida's all-time leading rusher, junior Kelvin Taylor - the son of NFL great Fred Taylor. This will be a major assignment!

YOUTH HEATING UP
Super Bowls, playoffs and all-star games highlight this week's look at youth football in South Florida with Jonah Woullard of Generation Nexxt.
