Gulliver students welcome Miami Heat championship trophy

Gulliver Academy's Pre-K3 through 8th grade students got the chance to see the Miami Heat's championship trophy Friday morning.

The kids wore white T-shirts in honor of the Heat's "White Hot" ad campaign, and chanted "Let's Go Heat" at the ceremony.

The event was part of the Heat's efforts to support the local community.

Late Thursday high school football recaps of weather-delayed games

Here are a couple of recaps that didn't make our paper last night because of weather delays. They'll be in our Saturday edition as well.

Late Thursday - Sunset 21, Coral Park 20:

Senior quarterback Alvaro Leon led the Knights’ offense, passing for 122 yards on 10 completions and a touchdown. Junior running back Kevin Dominguez had 88 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.

For the Rams, Sanders had 11 carries for 173 yards and a touchdown. Senior running back Triqon Bethel had 101 yards on 13 carries.

With less than two minutes in the fourth quarter, Coral Park’s Chris Sanders scored on a 60-yard run to cut Sunset’s lead to 21-20. The Rams attempted a two-point conversion but failed to convert on a run up the middle.

Late Thursday - Florida Christian 16, Ransom Everglades 6:

Florida Christian held on to an early lead over Ransom Everglades to outlast the Raiders. The Patriots offense was led by a three-headed rushing attack. The rushing leader was sophomore Giovanni Mallea with 91 yards and a touchdown.

The game had a late start due to a Thunder warning after the completion of the first drive of the game. The stormy conditions affected game play, as both teams combined for 11 turnovers in the game.

Moss, Cantero better after ugly collision in week 1

South Miami head coach David Gray said senior linebacker Korey Moss remained in the hospital through the weekend for tests -- all of which turned out negative -- following a collision with two minutes left in last Saturday’s game against Sunset.
Gray said it was not a head or neck injury, but more of a stinger. Moss tried to return to practice on Wednesday, but it was canceled due to weather. With a bye next week, Gray said Moss might get off Friday’s game against Killian to fully recover.
Moss, who tackled Daniel Cantero on the play, remained motionless on the field. Neither player was moved until fire rescue arrived, stopping play for nearly 40 minutes. Moss was immobilized on a hardboard stretcher, but could move his lower extremities. He gave a thumbs-up as he was being loaded into the truck. Cantero sat up at one point, but appeared to be dazed. Both players were transported to Kendall Medical Regional Center. Sunset couldn’t comment on Cantero’s status due to school policy.
