Thursday's People column will have the following report and it truly makes me angry:
AP- Akron Watson, an American Idol contestant from Dallas and one of the feel-good stories of the new season, has been disinvited from the Hollywood round of the show, possibly after producers discovered a pot bust on his record, reports TMZ.com. Watson, whose San Antonio audition aired on Tuesday, was arrested in April 2003 on a charge of misdemeanor possession of marijuana, according to court records obtained and posted by PegasusNews.com. He was headed to Hollywood after impressing the judges with his singing and his story. But Watson posted on his MySpace page that two days before he was scheduled to leave for Hollywood, he received a call saying that he would not be competing anymore "for unknown reasons.'' Idol‚ producers did not comment on Watson's reneged invitation.
Meanwhile, another contestant from San Antonio, Ashlyn Carr, was reportedly arrested in August and accused of pouring sugar into the gas tank of her ex-boyfriend while a student at Sam Houston State University, according to a report in The Houstonian Online. When confronted by police, says The Houstonian, Carr confessed to the crime. Carr was criticized by Idol judges for making weird facial expressions during her audition.
So why am I angry? Because this is insane. The dude had some pot four years ago. Big deal! Speaking as someone who doesn't like marijuana and has no interest in smoking it, I still think the pot laws in this country are unjust. That's an issue for another blog, but Idol, c'mon! Why can't a kid who tokes up every now and then have the chance to compete as a singer? The show's looking for "a superstar" not a religious holy leader. Nearly every great recording artist and idol has used marijuana -- and more. Can anyone name a bigger idol to more people than the late Bob Marley? Pothead, baby.
And if Akron is axed for a misdemeanor, why is Ashlyn allowed a free pass? Pouring sugar in someone else's gas tank should be considered a far greater crime than getting high. I'm not suggesting, necessarily, that Ashlyn should be DQ'd but if you're going to take the high moral ground here with your idiotic rules, if you're bumping Akron, who harmed no one, that nasty brat Ashlyn better be gone too.
What's next? Banning contestants who have masturbated? Last time I checked the Bible that was a sin too.
