It's disco night on American Idol tonight and we hear Anoop Desai, most likely to go home, sings Donna Summer's Dim All the Lights.
But first, Lil Rounds tackles Chaka Khan's 1978 hit, I'm Every Woman, and it was ear-splitting. Lil screams but can never put a whole line of a song together in tune. She's really out of her league and again Randy fretted it didn't show what kind of artist or vocal control she had. She had none. Kara says "we've all been waiting for her to sing Chaka but in this case it wasn't worth the wait." Paula said Lil was on vocal rest the other day "and had no voice." I don't buy it, she hasn't had a voice all season, except perhaps when she did an OK Celine Dion attempt weeks ago. Simon said "this is the last week we'll ever see you. No originality, copycat, arrangement vocals a mess." I agree 100 percent. Beyond that, she has no class. She kept arguing that she wasn't doing karaoke but the judges never used that word. And to her credit, she is correct. She wasn't doing karaoke. I've seen karaoke. And it's almost always better than Lil.
Kris Allen cheated by selecting a song that was not disco (Donna Summer's post-disco 1983 hit She Works Hard for the Money) and then strummed an acoustic guitar and did it Santana style. The judges loved it. Paula said that many women shop in the men's department but not many men shop in the women's department (that was in praise, by the way) and Simon continued the strangeness by saying it was great no matter whether Kris buys women's underwear. I'll be more concise: Kris earns points for originality, but I bought Donna Summer's original album for that song and I'd never buy Kris' album for his awkward and pretentious fit. Even more annoying on second listen.
Danny Gokey. Now THAT was karaoke. Of the worst kind. Phillip Bailey is now buying stock in ear plugs after Danny's gruff, forced and unmelodic take on EW&F's September. Even worse than Lil. At least she dresses properly for the stage. And where do they get judges like Kara who says "his pitch is so right on." It's not. He can't sing well at all, he's a slob in dress. Why is Idol pimping so hard for this Gokey guy??? He has no conception of show business. Paula even posted a Tweet on her Twitter account that Adam and Danny are going into the finals. Is the show so strongly rigged to ensure this because there is no value whatsoever to this contestant.
Allison Iraheta. Not sure if what she did to Donna Summer's Hot Stuff was singing or throwing a temper tantrum. Perhaps that sluggish, strained arrangement of that disco/rock classic made it harder to sing properly. Best of night so far, compared to the others, but that's not saying much yet. At least Allison has flair and edge.
Adam Lambert took the Gibb-written Yvonne Elliman Saturday Night Fever tune, If I Can't Have You, and found the anguish in the lyric by doing the song as a ballad. He delivered yet another striking performance. Honest, emotional vocals with true depth of understanding. There is no reason to continue this show this season. Adam's so far ahead of these other Season 8 lightweights he's already moved into and beyond Season 9.
Anoop Desai sang Summer's Dim All the Lights as a ballad and while it wasn't as effective as Adam's ballad version of a disco song, Anoop can sing. Problem is, Anoop can only sing effectively in slow tempo. Simon thought it was Anoop's "worst performance by a mile" -- it wasn't -- and the other judges liked it. Simon clearly doesn't like Anoop and had said last week off camera he would not save him. He did everything he could tonight to ensure Anoop loses.
Predictions: Two people go home and Lil is the surest best cuz she was awful by any measure. Anoop probably will go based on lack of votes and support. But if I had my say I'd substitute Danny or Kris or even Allison in the bottom this week. Listening back on the recap and they all hurt my ears. Best of night: Adam and Matt and Anoop has a nice voice but lacks star power.
