Disco Night on American Idol

It's disco night on American Idol tonight and we hear Anoop Desai, most likely to go home, sings Donna Summer's Dim All the Lights.

Lil But first, Lil Rounds tackles Chaka Khan's 1978 hit, I'm Every Woman, and it was ear-splitting. Lil screams but can never put a whole line of a song together in tune. She's really out of her league and again Randy fretted it didn't show what kind of artist or vocal control she had. She had none. Kara says "we've all been waiting for her to sing Chaka but in this case it wasn't worth the wait." Paula said Lil was on vocal rest the other day "and had no voice." I don't buy it, she hasn't had a voice all season, except perhaps when she did an OK Celine Dion attempt weeks ago. Simon said "this is the last week we'll ever see you. No originality, copycat, arrangement vocals a mess." I agree 100 percent. Beyond that, she has no class. She kept arguing that she wasn't doing karaoke but the judges never used that word. And to her credit, she is correct. She wasn't doing karaoke. I've seen karaoke. And it's almost always better than Lil.

Kris Kris Allen cheated by selecting a song that was not disco (Donna Summer's post-disco 1983 hit She Works Hard for the Money) and then strummed an acoustic guitar and did it Santana style. The judges loved it. Paula said that many women shop in the men's department but not many men shop in the women's department (that was in praise, by the way) and Simon continued the strangeness by saying it was great no matter whether Kris buys women's underwear. I'll be more concise: Kris earns points for originality, but I bought Donna Summer's original album for that song and I'd never buy Kris' album for his awkward and pretentious fit. Even more annoying on second listen.

Dokey Danny Gokey. Now THAT was karaoke. Of the worst kind. Phillip Bailey is now buying stock in ear plugs after Danny's gruff, forced and unmelodic take on EW&F's September. Even worse than Lil. At least she dresses properly for the stage. And where do they get judges like Kara who says "his pitch is so right on." It's not. He can't sing well at all, he's a slob in dress. Why is Idol pimping so hard for this Gokey guy??? He has no conception of show business. Paula even posted a Tweet on her Twitter account that Adam and Danny are going into the finals. Is the show so strongly rigged to ensure this because there is no value whatsoever to this contestant.

Ally Allison Iraheta. Not sure if what she did to Donna Summer's Hot Stuff was singing or throwing a temper tantrum. Perhaps that sluggish, strained arrangement of that disco/rock classic made it harder to sing properly. Best of night so far, compared to the others, but that's not saying much yet. At least Allison has flair and edge.

Adam Adam Lambert took the Gibb-written Yvonne Elliman Saturday Night Fever tune, If I Can't Have You, and found the anguish in the lyric by doing the song as a ballad. He delivered yet another striking performance. Honest, emotional vocals with true depth of understanding. There is no reason to continue this show this season. Adam's so far ahead of these other Season 8 lightweights he's already moved into and beyond Season 9.

Matt Matt Giraud may be Stayin' Alive after delivering a credible cover of the Bee Gees firecracker. Good performance and I hope he is rewarded with another week. Probably Matt's best of the season.

Anop Anoop Desai sang Summer's Dim All the Lights as a ballad and while it wasn't as effective as Adam's ballad version of a disco song, Anoop can sing. Problem is, Anoop can only sing effectively in slow tempo. Simon thought it was Anoop's "worst performance by a mile" -- it wasn't -- and the other judges liked it. Simon clearly doesn't like Anoop and had said last week off camera he would not save him. He did everything he could tonight to ensure Anoop loses.

Predictions: Two people go home and Lil is the surest best cuz she was awful by any measure. Anoop probably will go based on lack of votes and support. But if I had my say I'd substitute Danny or Kris or even Allison in the bottom this week. Listening back on the recap and they all hurt my ears. Best of night: Adam and Matt and Anoop has a nice voice but lacks star power.

oh boy.....love Dim All the Lights but by Anoop? Yikes.

Lesley

Lil is gone..this is the Whitney version and it blows....

Lane

should I watch? I haven't in weeks

Lesley

Lane--oy....it's the same crap...they all suck and they fawn over Adam. Your call. I can't stop tho.

Lane

I'll flip back and forth, the thought of Adam getting to do disco makes me dry heave

Lesley

Me too, Lane. But it's like a train wreck, I can't stop watching. And Bob Hoskins as Susan Boyle indeed. hahahahahahha

Lesley

what disco song had the acoustic guitar? whaaa? ewww, first of all, She Works Hard for the Money is NOT from disco era.

Lane

I dunno, I give him credit for totally redoing a song and making it his style

Bob Hoskins is so right, I can't believe no one else mentions it

Lesley

not sure what to think on this one...he sure is making it his own.....he is still adorable and has a good voice. after a second thought, I THINK I LOVE IT. Go Kris. Balls for doing this even tho it isn't disco.

Lesley

danny g sounds like a performer on main street in the magic kingdom or a piano bar on a cruise ship. good times, not good tunes.

Lane

let's welcome Uncle Harold and Aunt Midge to the Bar Mitzvah!!!

HoCo

Adam is the only reason to watch Idol this season, as these first three painful performances prove. Danny may well be the all time worst Top 7 finalist.

Lesley

total bar mitzvah band....all he needed were the neon necklaces....

Lesley

OMG, Allison...v. cool. Then again, she's 16 and singing Hot Stuff...kinda creepy. But cool delivery

Lesley

hate to agree w you HoCo, as much as I loathe him, Adam IS the reason to watch this..if he sucks tonight, it's just the worst season EVER!

Lesley

this is the most lackluster Idol season yet...there are no real contenders except, according to everyone, Adam. What fun is that when there is only one front runner..zzzzzzzzzz

HoCo

Kinda makes you long for Britain's Got Talent, huh? :-)

Lesley

Maybe they will have a Susan Boyle night!

Lesley

Where is Yvonne Eliman anyway?

Lane

Adam = Zzzzz

Lesley

adam can sing the ABCs and they'd all lose their cookies over him. predictable

Lesley

OMG, hubby said Adam and Boyle should have a sing off. Now THAT would be interesting!

Lane

quien es mas macho? Senora Boyle or Senor Lambert?

Lane

this "Stayin Alive" is Disney World parade-ish

Lesley

although i'm not loving him, matt is very current.

Lane

Paula with a metaphor that maybe made sense.

Kudos.

Lesley

Boyle will kick Lambert's ass Billy Elliott style.

HoCo

Adam's brilliant. One of the best contestant's Idol has had in 8 seasons. Nothing zzz about him.

Lesley

but Howard, there's no excitement here...they already anointed Adam the winner weeks ago basically....there's no umph or spirit of competition really..seems like they are all going thru the motions knowing that Adam is going to win. that's what makes it all zzzzz

HoCo

It's telling that you all are linking the names Adam and Boyle together because Adam is clearly the only one you could ever elevate to that level in a sing-off. You certainly could never hope to pit a no talent dork like Gokey against the joyous vocal stylings of Boyle.
As to who would win? It's comparing apples and oranges. Adam could sing ballads like Boyle tho. I dont think Boyle could sing rock. Adam has more range.

Lesley

they all stripped the disco out of disco night and made it ballad night. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Anoop, however, has a lovely voice.

Lane

I hope the rumors are true and Simon does leave and start his own American version of X-Factor. If he took Paula with him, it'd cripple Idol. No joke.

HoCo

Anoop does have a nice voice. I think he'll go home cuz simon clearly dislikes him and he lacks viewer support. Lil is the sure bet to go home but instead of Anoop I'd swap in Danny, Kris or even Allison to go home for their performances. Adam and Matt were my 2 favorites, Matt for the very first time, probably.
Im glad Adam didn't do the obvious Sylvester song we figured he could or would. He defies expectations, yet another reason he's interesting.

Diggity Dave

Howard, enough with being an Adam fanboy every week. So predictable and so boring. Adam is a good singer, and great performer, but he's not way above everyone else like you say.

Both Kris and Gokey are far better singers than Adam. Kris actually takes a song, makes it original, and it sounds good, unlike Adam. He continues to take great songs and mutilate them into his own work, and it sucks. If I heard half his crap on the radio, I'd turn it off.

While I admire Adam because he does have a good skill set, I think people are out of their minds when they declare him the winner.
