American Idols on The Billboard Hot 100

Idol logo This week's Billboard Hot 100 might as well carry the blue American Idol logo. Eighteen songs are from Idols and finalists. The biggest booty comes via download singles from this season's top 2 champs, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert.

Kris leads the way among singles' sales but Adam outdoes Kris on the Billboard 200 album chart. A grouping of Adam's Idol performances debuts at No. 33 while Kris' "album" enters at No. 50.

The nine debuting singles by Kris and Adam are:
No. 11: No Boundaries, Kris Allen
No. 16: Heartless, Kris Allen
No. 19: Mad World, Adam Lambert
No. 37: Ain't No Sunshine, Kris Allen
No. 56: A Change Is Gonna Come, Adam Lambert
No. 66: Apologize, Kris Allen
No. 72: No Boundaries, Adam Lambert
No. 82: One, Adam Lambert
No. 94: Falling Slowly, Kris Allen

Also David Cook debuts at No. 24 with Permanent, the song he performed on the season
finale. Cook also re-enters with his previous single, Come Back to Me at No. 84. Carrie Underwood
also re-enters the chart, with her remake of Motley Crue's Home Sweet Home, at No. 79.
Carrie is also at No. 68 this week with I Told You So, featuring its originator Randy Travis.

Kelly Clarkson, slips with her new single I Do Not Hook Up (No. 32) as well as its
predecessor, My Life Would Suck Without You (No. 30); Kellie Pickler holds Top 20 on the country chart with Best Days Of Your Life; Daughtry and Jordin Sparks are also on the chart with singles from their coming sophomore albums, No Surprise and Battlefield, respectively.

Let's compare those numbers to last year's finalists in the same chart:
3 Cook- The Time Of My Life
15 Cook- Dream Big
22 Cook- I Still Haven't Found What I Am Looking For
28 Cook- The World I Know
36 Archuleta- Imagine
42 Cook- I Don't Want To Miss A Thing
47 Cook- Billie Jean
58 Archuleta- Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me
67 Cook- Always Be My Baby
60 Archuleta- In This Moment
73 Cook- Hello
77 Cook- The Music Of The Night
92 Cook- Eleanor Rigby
99 Cook- I'm Alive

Cook reportedly had 6 other songs bubbling under the Hot 100 (I apologize for not having the numbers for Archie's Top 200, but he had some of his there, too):
101 Little Sparrow
103 Hungry Like The Wolf
104 Innocent
114 Day Tripper
118 All Right Now
125 Happy Together

Those are some very compelling numbers. Last year, I thought David's Billboard record may have been due to the Idol format of having several songs out there at one time with maxiumum TV exposure. However, this year's results support that his accomplishment has more to do with him than with the Idol format... if it were Idol, then we'd see similar numbers every year. I hope they keep the iTunes singles around next season.

I don't think there's any comparison between Cook and this year's crop. Different competition on the chart from year to year. I have no doubt that when Adam releases an album he'll make a greater impact than Cook and Archuleta combined. Hard physical sales are slowing, but in terms of pop culture impact, Adam's already a much bigger artist than Cook ever was.

I like Adam... and like the way he's handling the press. There's a rumor of a pending Rolling Stones cover. Unfortunately it's not Adam's music that's getting pop culture attention. May he and Kris (and Allison!) have much success.
