Kelly Clarkson scores her 2nd No. 1 CD

Kelly_clarkson_my_life_would_suck_without_youGiven how many millions of copies it sold -- and how omnipresent its hit single, Since U Been Gone, was, it's surprising that Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway album never went to No. 1.

That distinction was reserved for her first album, Thankful, six years ago. Until now.

Her fourth album, All I Ever Wanted will debut at No. 1 on the next Billboard 200 chart on first week sales of 254,671. Not a huge number, but this is the music bidness we're talking about now. Sales were fueled by appearances on American Idol and Saturday Night Live last week of the set's killer single, My Life Would Suck Without You.

Meantime, Kelly tweets on Twitter: "I'll be on Good Morning America this Friday. Set your TiVo's!"

Review: Kelly Clarkson's new CD doesn't "Suck"

Here's my review of Kelly Clarkson's new CD, All I Ever Wanted. Look for print version in Monday's Miami Herald Tropical Life.

Kelly Kelly Clarkson, All I Ever Wanted (RCA/19). 2.5 stars (out of 4).

Forget Tatiana Del Toro's histrionic melodramatics on American Idol's current eighth season. Kelly Clarkson is American Idol's original drama queen.

When Clarkson -- the first Idol winner -- wanted to strike out in her own artistic direction on her third album, the hard rocking and gloomy My December in 2007, it became an all-out media war with her disapproving label head Clive Davis. On her more conciliatory fourth effort, All I Ever Wanted, Clarkson returns to the Davis-approved infectious, gym-worthy pop/rock that had made her career.

That doesn't mean Clarkson's at ease. When faced with the loss of a lover, she isn't simply downhearted. Instead, she roars over cranking electric guitars and thumping synths about how her life will totally suck without this person (My Life Would Suck Without You, this CD's closest mark to her previous high point, Since U Been Gone). On the New Wave-oriented beat of the title track she teeters at "an in-between to escape this desperate scene.'' And on the grandiose Ready, she offers this odd complaint: "Too much of your mouth is like too much sun/How I burn.''

All this overly amped angst is enough to lead to aural sunburn and between overproduced ballads like Cry or the hyperventilated '80s speed rock of Whyyawannabringmedown the CD gets awfully wearying over 14 tracks.

Clarkson's still a better, stronger singer than her sisters in uber-mainstream pop and she's working with the biggest names (Howard Benson, Max Martin, Dr. Luke, new Idol judge Kara DioGuardi). Overall, All I Ever Wanted is on par or a slight notch above her previous albums but Clarkson is still best if taken in singles doses. With My Life Would Suck Without You and a few others here, she's working toward one hell of a greatest hits album. Take that, Tatiana.

Pod Picks: My Life Would Suck Without You, All I Ever Wanted, If I Can't Have You.

Taylor Hicks (almost) goes "The Distance"

Taylor CD  2-stars Fifth season American Idol winner Taylor Hicks suffered the usual Idol indignity: Win the show and rush release a mediocre major label album on BMG. A few years ago Hicks' eponymous set had one good song, a surprising and effective cover of songwriter Paul Pena's Gotta Move. (Pena's the late dude who write and recorded Jet Airliner a few years before the Steve Miller Band found it and had the hit).

Beyond that track, Taylor Hicks was a stiff and he ultimately was dropped.

On March 10, Hicks returns with a new album, The Distance, on an indie label and ... it's not bad.

The main problem with Hicks, of course,  is getting beyond his image on Idol. His spastic performances, his look and his somewhat offputting persona post-show (not the warmest guy you'll ever meet) remains so entrenched in the mind, it unfortunately colors one's initial reaction when greeted with The Distance. Put his image out of mind -- hard, I know, I know -- and his new CD gets off to a decent start. The title song and What's Right Is Right sound like tracks that would have fit well on Doobie Brother Michael McDonald's first solo album in 1982 and are also much preferable to McDonald's current career of regurgitating tired old Motown songs.

Also gpod, the shuffling Seven Mile Breakdown, a track well worth slapping on your iPod. These keepers make up for the Achy Breaky Heart rip off, Keeping It Real (the verses are almost identical to the polarizing Billy Ray Cyrus single of 1992) and the sentimental Nineteen and its tale of war heros.

The album's ultimate debit is Hicks' weakness as a vocalist. He can sing, for sure, and in small doses actually exhibits soul and some chops (as on the aforementioned highlights). The problem is that Hicks tends to sing every song in the same tone so over the long haul his albums run into a samey pattern and feel long. Worse, he doesn't put the requisite attitude in tracks that call for it. For example, Wedding Day Blues, is Hicks' tale of stealing the bride, his ex, from the groom at the reception. The song begins with a James Taylor-like acoustic guitar intro and calls out for a snarky lead vocal -- the guy in the song is a cad, knows he is, but doesn't care -- yet Hicks sings it straightforward, the same way he delivers the somewhat sappy Nineteen, the Latin lilt of Once Upon a Lover and the frisky Seven Mile Breakdown. Hicks has a specific range he's good in but great artists can bring flair and a distinct persona to stylized tracks such as Wedding Day Blues and Hicks falls well short of greatness.

The Distance is an improvement over the major label record, it's not the worst Idol related CD at all, it's easily superior to the latest offerings of last season's one and two finishers David Cook and David Archuleta. In doses, it's engaging -- a word I never thought I'd use in a Taylor Hicks commentary -- but if you're looking for true soul patrol greatness, check out the latest CD from Season Six third placer Melinda Doolittle instead.Melinda

Idol's Grammy winners

Grammy Awards Show CADC234 Grammy Awards Show CADC212 American Idols continued to collect awards with this Sunday's Grammys Awards. Carrie Underwood added to her haul with a country vocal win for Last Name, a song (and performance) that hardly qualifies as country music, and Jennifer Hudson is now an Oscar and Grammy winner as her debut album scored an R&B win.

Phil Stacey signs new record deal

Phil Idol finalist Phil Stacey released a country CD last year on Lyric Street, which had some success with fellow Idol Bucky Covington. Alas, Phil's CD failed to catch on with the public or critics (altho I loved one of its tracks, "Round Here, written by Little Big Town).

Phil isn't done, tho. He's signed a deal with Christian label Reunion Records and is recording his first album for them for a planned summer release. Producer is Brown Bannister (Amy Grant, Steven Curtis Chapman and fellow Idol, Mandisa).
