Did the US troops violate the flag of truce and put Osceola in prison?
(Seminole Man, ca. 1900, credit: HistoryMiami)
Osceola was an influential Seminole leader at the beginning of the nineteenth century. When President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, the new law made it illegal for Native Americans to live east of the Mississippi River. When the United States government attempted to force The Seminole off their land in Florida Osceola led The Seminole in a revolt against the United States. Finally, in 1837, waving a flag of truce, Osceola surrendered to United State troops.
