When Abraham Lincoln became president in 1861, South Carolina led the Southern States to secede from the Union.  The newly formed Confederate States of America quickly found themselves in the midst of what we now call the Civil War.  Battles were fought in almost every state east of the Mississippi River, including Florida.

When Columbus returned to Spain after landing for the first time in North America, he brought with him tales of his adventures.  Columbus’ tales of great wealth set off a rush of European Exploration of the new continent.  One of the major nations in exploration was Spain.

Did the US troops violate the flag of truce and put Osceola in prison?

Osceola was an influential Seminole leader at the beginning of the nineteenth century.  When President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, the new law made it illegal for Native Americans to live east of the Mississippi River.  When the United States government attempted to force The Seminole off their land in Florida Osceola led The Seminole in a revolt against the United States.  Finally, in 1837, waving a flag of truce, Osceola surrendered to United State troops.

What is the name of the underwater coral reef park located in the Florida Keys?

The first underwater coral reef park was created on Key Largo in 1963.  It was named after the editor of the Miami Herald, an influential environmentalist who helped create Everglades National Park.
