Sweat Records celebrates a year of hosting great live music at Vagabond tonight Friday with shows by indie-jazz-pop (talk about covering your stylistic bases) Van* Gloria and the electrifying electro act Panic Bomber. Alas (cue crocodile tears) I'll be up at Cruzan Amph for Coldplay and Pete Yorn - check my review Saturday afternoon in the Herald and Tuesday in print (cue puzzled look here).
Art Official, a fab Miami combo of hiphop emcees Newsense and Logics with a jazz quartet (yes it works, and it swings) won big money props this past Wednesday. The group beat 400 other bands (including, alas, another more than worthwhile Miami group, Awesome New Republic) in the Florida Chapter of The Recording Academy's annual Florida GRAMMY Showcase in Orlando to win a $25,000 artist development package of software, music equipment, studio time and more. (Might be interesting to follow how much that really helps them.)
Art Official throws down many places in the next few weeks, including May 18 at the Clevelander on South Beach, May 23 at PS 14, and June 12 at the White Room.
More Vagabond fun - Jellybean spins Saturday May 16th for the club's anniversary party. I knew Jellybean when (not telling any of you exactly when) he was dating Madonna (she was my neighbor on the Lower East Side); still remember walking into her dressing room at the Funhouse before her show one New Year's Eve with some other friends and surprising them in the middle of an argument.
Hopefully that teensy tiny and well aged bit of celebrity gossip will distract any of you from speculating how old I was then.
