Philadelphia-based hip-hop band The Roots, the house band for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, has released the title track and debut single from its forthcoming ninth album, How I Got Over.
Best part about it? It's free (for the time being) on drummer ?uestlove's website, Okayplayer (*Full disclosure: I wrote for Okayplayer from 2005 to 2008).
Although not as James Brown-funky as the live performance on Fallon was, the song features jazzy ride cymbal-heavy drums, Latin percussion, and upbeat organ work. Most surprisingly, rapper Black Thought spends much of the track singing instead of rapping.
How I Got Over, the group's third album for Def Jam Records, should hit stores and download services on September 29.
