"New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york aint always what it seems."
The iconic lyrics from Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five was the last message tweeted by DJ AM before his death Friday.
Born Adam Goldstein, AM might be best known for surviving a plane crash with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker less than a year ago. But to the hip-hop and music communities in general, he was a pioneer.
He hit the music scene with one-hit-wonder rock band Crazytown (remember "Butterfly"?), but he helped usher in an era of mash-up club DJing that involved mixing seemingly disparate genres of music. That culminated with his live (and mixtape) collaborations with Barker.
AM recently starred in a Nike commercial with Kobe Bryant and Mike Epps (he was a HUGE sneakerhead), DJed with Jay-Z's band and filmed episodes for an upcoming MTV reality show.

...dude survived a plane crash to die of an overdose less than a year later??? It might be horrible to think this but I wish someone else made it out of that crash instead of him.
