Mmm, there's just no end to the mixes that music can make these days. Take Novalima, the electronic Afro-Peruvian ensemble that hits Transit Lounge at midnight this Saturday. Afro-Peruvian music, with its soulful sound and Afro-Caribbean related beats, is already its own mini-world music phenom, whose biggest star is Susanna Baca.
Put together by four Peruvian friends who'd been playing intermittently with each other for over 20 years and gone to live around the world in the late 90's, Novalima has put together a combination of hypnotic, gutsy, traditional Afro-Peruvian beats and equally hypnotic electronic dance music. Their latest album, Coba Coba, on Vermont based! label Cumbancha, is making some noise stateside - Novalima played SXSX this year, and picked up a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album.
There's some nice documentary bio videos on Youtube.
But obviously, no substitute for the live funky thing.
