Have you enjoyed a show at The Fillmore Miami Beach at The Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami Beach? Well, even though Live Nation renovated the venue in 2007 (and it quickly became my favorite place to see concerts in South Florida), one proposal Miami Beach leaders are looking at may involve tearing down the historic theater in order to expand the Miami Beach Convention Center.
The former Miami Beach Auditorium has hosted countless concerts and events for over 50 years, including television shows by Jackie Gleason, Dick Clark and Ed Sullivan, as well as Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants.
In its current configuration, the venue is home to a dozen or so music, comedy, and dance performances per month. The upcoming schedule includes Band of Horses, New Kinds On The Block, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Passion Pit, 50 Cent, Paulina Rubio, and Hole.
Miami Herald staffer David Smiley writes more about the upcoming community workshop to discuss the issue, as well as the Facebook group that has popped up in support of saving The Fillmore.
What do you think about this proposal?
