Elissa Vanaver has been named director of strategic planning for Breakthrough Miami, an organization that provides academics, enrichment and mentoring for economically disadvantaged middle and high school students and has been nationally recognized for its student-teaching-students internships for college students. Before joining Breakthrough, she was vice president for human resources and assistant to the publisher for the Miami Herald Media Company, and, between 2000 and 2002, managing editor of The Miami Herald.
