Elissa Vanaver named director of strategic planning for Breakthrough Miami

Elissa VanaverElissa Vanaver has been named director of strategic planning for Breakthrough Miami, an organization that provides academics, enrichment and mentoring for economically disadvantaged middle and high school students and has been nationally recognized for its student-teaching-students internships for college students. Before joining Breakthrough, she was vice president for human resources and assistant to the publisher for the Miami Herald Media Company, and, between 2000 and 2002, managing editor of The Miami Herald.

Alina Falcon named senior executive vice president for news and alternative programming at Telemundo Media

Alina FalconAlina Falcon has been named senior executive vice president for news and alternative programming at Telemundo Media. She will have strategic and operational oversight of all Telemundo news properties including “Al Rojo Vivo with Maria Celeste,” “Noticiero Telemundo,” and the Sunday public affairs show “Enfoque with Jose Diaz-Balart.” She also will supervise the overall news programming strategy at the local Telemundo stations and will oversee the network’s domestic and international news bureaus and all on-air news talent development. She also will supervise Telemundo’s alternative and reality programming and popular specials including “Billboard Latin Music Awards” and “Miss Universe.” Before joining the network, she held several leadership positions at Univision Communications, most recently as president of news.

David Feinberg named vice president of retail services at Tropical Financial Credit Union

David FeinbergDavid Feinberg has been named vice president of retail services at Tropical Financial Credit Union. He will be responsible for overseeing the processes of the branch network, the member contact center and the business services division. Gregory Kurth named president and chief executive officer of Kids In Distress of Broward and Palm Beach counties

Gregory KurthGregory Kurth is has been named president and chief executive officer of Kids In Distress of Broward and Palm Beach counties, replacing Thomas J. Tomczyk who is retiring after serving as the president and CEO since 1996. Kurth will oversee the agency, which works toward the prevention of child abuse, preservation of the family, and the care and treatment of abused and neglected children. An experienced social services executive, he was CEO of Family Services of Metro Orlando, a community-based agency that manages all services for families involved with child protection in two counties. He also was senior vice president of One Hope United in Chicago.

Alicia Grande promoted to vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer at Catalyst Pharmaceutical Partners, Inc.

Raul Reis named dean of FIU School of Journalism and Mass Communication

Raul ReisRaul Reis has been named dean of the FIU School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He succeeds Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver as dean. In his new role, Reis will work with FIU Provost Douglas Wartzok and SJMC administration and faculty to fulfill his priorities for the school, which include innovation, global education and engagement with the professional and global community. Before joining FIU, he was professor of journalism and mass communication at California State University, Long Beach, where he also served as a department chair. He began his academic and professional career in his native Brazil, where he worked as a reporter, writer and assistant editor for several newspapers.
