The University of Miami Board of Trustees have named three new members: Adrienne Arsht, Bruce E. Toll and UM student Shajena Erazo. The board is responsible for governing the University of Miami.
- Arsht is chairman emerita of TotalBank.
- Toll is vice chairman of Toll Brothers, a luxury homes builder. Also, he is the chairman of the Philadelphia Media Holdings, which owns the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Daily News and Phylli.com. He is an alumnus of UM and a member of the UM President's Council.
- Erazo is pursuing a bachelor of arts in English with a minor in psychology and religion.

José Szapocznik has been named chairman of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He also serves as associate dean for community development and director of the Center for Family Studies at the Miller School.
He replaces Clyde McCoy, who served as department chair for more than 12 years.

Lydia M. Acosta has been hired at Nova Southeastern University as vice president for information services and university librarian. She starts on July 1st.
Previously, she directed the East Baton Rouge Parish Library in Louisiana.

Miami International University of Art & Design has made new appointments to its board of trustees:
Javier Hernandez-Lichtl, chief executive of South Miami Hospital, has been named as the new chairman of the board.
Ray Azcuy, director in the Division of Schools of Choice for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and Fred Steinberg, a retired attorney, have been appointed as new board members.

Mary Mapes has been promoted to associate dean of Academic Affairs at the Miami International University of Art & Design.
She joined the university four years ago after a career as a graphic designer. Previously, she was publications director for the University of Miami’s North-South Center Press, advertising art department manager for The Miami Herald, art director for John Held Advertising and associate art editor for McGraw-Hill.

Norm Tripp, founder and chairman emeritus with the law firm of Tripp Scott, has been appointed to the Board of Governors of the State University System of Florida, pending confirmation by the Florida Senate.
The Board of Governors is the constitutional body created by voters in 2002 to guide the State University System of Florida.
He was vice chairman of the board of trustees at Florida Atlantic University, a member of the advisory board of the Huizenga School of Business at Nova Southeastern University, and a member of the South Florida Board for the Annenberg Challenge Grant. In addition, he was on the University of Miami board of trustees and a former vice chair and chair of the State Board of Community Colleges. He also founded Alamo Rent-a-Car.

The Department of Medicine at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine has named five new division chiefs.
Dr. Amir K. Jaffer has been hired as chief of the newly created Division of Hospital Medicine. He spent ten years at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio as associate section head for hospital medicine.
Dr. Paul Martin has been hired as chief of the Division of Hepatology. Most recently he was associate chief of liver diseases at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
Dr. Maria Abreu has been hired as chief of the Division of Gastroenterology. Most recently she was the director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.
Dr. Jochen Reiser has been hired as chief of the Division of Nephrology. He joins the school from the Nephrology Division at Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Matthias Salathe has been appointed as chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He served as interim chief for the past year and has been on the faculty at the Miller School of Medicine for eleven years.

Karen A. Callaghan has been appointed as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Barry University. She has served on the Barry faculty for 19 years, beginning her career as assistant professor of Sociology, and most recently served as interim dean for the School of Arts and Sciences.

Stephen Leifman and Frank Ramos have been appointed to the community advisory board for the Honors College at Florida International University.
Leifman is special advisor to the chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court on Criminal Justice and Mental Health, and serves as chair of the Florida Chief Justice’s Subcommittee on Mental Health and chair of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Mental Health Committee.
Ramos is an Honors College alumnus and is a partner at the law firm of Clarke Silverglate & Campbell.

Jeffrey Mello has been appointed interim dean of the Andreas School of Business at Barry University, effective July 1. His appointment follows the retirement of Jack Scarborough, the current dean.

Luigi Salvaneschi has been elected to the Board of Trustees for Barry University.
He is a real estate and development executive, business professor and author. From 1988-91, he was president of Blockbuster. From 1983-87, he was senior vice president of Kentucky Fried Chicken. From 1964-83, he was vice president of development with McDonald’s.
This is his second stint as a member of the university’s Board of Trustees. He is also an adjunct professor in BU’s School of Business.

Miami Dade College has hired two new campus presidents.
Gina Cortes-Suarez is the new president at the InterAmerican Campus and Anita S. Kaplan is the new president of the Medical Center Campus.
Cortes-Suarez was interim president at the InterAmerican Campus for the past year. Kaplan arrives at MDC’s Medical Center Campus from Erie Community College in Buffalo, N.Y., where she served as executive vice president for Academic Affairs.

The cardiology department at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine has hired two directors.
Dr. Gervasio Antonio "Tony" Lamas has been hired as the medical director of the Coronary Care Unit at the University of Miami Hospital, and director of the fellowship training program at the University of Miami Hospital and Jackson Memorial Hospital.
He is leaving Mt. Sinai Medical Center as director of cardiovascular research and academic affairs after 15 years. He will be continuing his private practice at the University of Miami Hospital.
Dr. Vivek Y. Reddy has been hired as director of the electrophysiology section in the Cardiovascular Division, assembling a team of clinicians and researchers in cardiac arrhythmia.
He was previously the director of experimental electrophysiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

Miami Beach resident Tony A. Trujillo, Jr. has been appointed chief executive officer of The Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education in Key Biscayne.
He was the former executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Intelsat Global Service Corporation in Washington, D.C.
The Pankey Institute is a non-profit organization that promotes optimal oral health care through advanced continuing education for dentists.

Hans C. Graber has been elected chairman of the division of applied marine physics at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.
He has been with the university for 17 years. He also serves as the co-director of CSTARS (Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing), a real-time satellite reception and analysis facility in southern Miami-Dade County.

Fred Menachem has been hired as director of development for Johnson & Wales University’s North Miami Campus.
He will be responsible for leading a campus fundraising program, maintaining relations with donors, facilitating solicitation of major gifts, gaining support of corporations and foundations and coordinating alumni giving campaigns.
He previously owned FJM Consulting Group, a firm specializing in fundraising and lobbying, where he led development efforts for the Miami Symphony Orchestra. He also served as finance and political director to former Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas.
