Chief of surgical oncology division at Cancer HealthCare Associates

Dr. Daniel Weingrad has been hired at Cancer HealthCare Associates as chief of its division of surgical oncology. He will manage CHCA's delivery of surgical services and treat patients at the facility at University of Miami Hospital and other locations in Aventura and Miami Beach.

He currently is on staff at University of Miami Hospital, North Shore Medical Center, Aventura Hospital and Mt. Sinai Medical Center.

Chairman of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at UM Miller School of Medicine

José Szapocznik has been named chairman of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He also serves as associate dean for community development and director of the Center for Family Studies at the Miller School.

He replaces Clyde McCoy, who served as department chair for more than 12 years.

New leadership team at Cleveland Clinic

Cleveland Clinic in Weston has appointed a new leadership team:

Dr. Steven Wexner has been named chief academic officer. He began his career at Cleveland Clinic in Florida in 1988 and has served as chairman of the department of colorectal surgery since 1993, as well as chief of staff from 1997 to 2007.

Dr. Juan Nogueras has been named chief medical officer. Since 2000, he served as chairman of the division of surgery. He is also the current president of the South Florida chapter of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Mark Sesto has been named chairman of the division of surgery. He has been on staff with Cleveland Clinic in Florida since 1988, when the multidisciplinary group practice first opened in Florida. He has served as chairman of the department of general and vascular surgery since 1991.

Kerry Major has been named chief nursing officer. Previously, she was director of the medical surgical services department and has been with Cleveland Clinic in Florida since 2004.

Five new division chiefs at UM Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine

The Department of Medicine at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine has named five new division chiefs.

Dr. Amir K. Jaffer has been hired as chief of the newly created Division of Hospital Medicine. He spent ten years at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio as associate section head for hospital medicine.

Dr. Paul Martin has been hired as chief of the Division of Hepatology. Most recently he was associate chief of liver diseases at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.







 
Dr. Maria Abreu has been hired as chief of the Division of Gastroenterology. Most recently she was the director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.








Dr. Jochen Reiser has been hired as chief of the Division of Nephrology. He joins the school from the Nephrology Division at Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Matthias Salathe has been appointed as chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He served as interim chief for the past year and has been on the faculty at the Miller School of Medicine for eleven years.

Jane Mass, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of the Jackson Health System, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Florida Center for Nursing by Governor Charlie Crist.  Her term will run until June 13, 2009.

The Florida Center for Nursing is housed in the College of Health and Public Affairs at the University of Central Florida.  The Center focuses its efforts on addressing issues of supply and demand for nursing in Florida, including recruitment, retention, and utilization of nurse workforce resources.

He is leaving Mt. Sinai Medical Center as director of cardiovascular research and academic affairs after 15 years. He will be continuing his private practice at the University of Miami Hospital.

Dr. Vivek Y. Reddy has been hired as director of the electrophysiology section in the Cardiovascular Division, assembling a team of clinicians and researchers in cardiac arrhythmia.

He was previously the director of experimental electrophysiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

President of Mount Sinai Medical Center Foundation

Mark H. Hildebrandt has been named president of Mount Sinai Medical Center Foundation.

He has been a member of the hospital’s Board of Trustees since 1997. He has been actively involved with Mount Sinai since 1987, when he joined the Young Presidents Club of Mount Sinai and later became chairman of the group.  He was appointed to the Foundation’s Board of Directors in 1993 and four years later he joined the Founders of Mount Sinai, the hospital's philanthropic group.

The foundation is the fundraising arm of Mount Sinai Medical Center, a private, independent not-for-profit teaching hospital in Miami Beach.

CEO of Broward Health steps down to work in Louisiana

Alan Levine has stepped down as president and chief executive of The North Broward Hospital District to serve as secretary of the Department of Health and Hospitals for Louisiana.

The Board of Commissioners for the hospital district will begin a search nationally for a replacement. Frank Nask, the district's chief financial officer, has been named by the Board as the interim president and chief executive. 

Before becoming president and CEO of the hospital district, Levine served as Deputy Chief of Staff, Health Policy Advisor and Secretary of Health Care Administration for Governor Jeb Bush.

Co-chair of March of Dimes WalkAmerica 2008

Patrick Maloney, chief executive of Broward Health Coral Springs Medical Center, has been named co-chair for the March of Dimes WalkAmerica 2008 campaign.

The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.

CEO of Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundation

James R. Konschnik has been hired the chief executive of The Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundation, headquartered in Hallandale.

The Surgical Weight Loss Institute relocates office

The Surgical Weight Loss Institute, headed by Dr. Nestor de la Cruz Munoz, has relocated from Miami to Coral Gables. The new office is located at 747 Ponce de Leon Blvd., #700.

CEO and chairman at Noven Pharmaceuticals

Robert C. Strauss has retired as chief executive and chairman of Noven Pharmaceuticals, the Kendall drug-maker known primarily for its pharmaceutical patches.

The interim chief executive, effective Thursday, is Jeffrey F. Eisenberg, 42, Noven's senior vice president of strategic alliances. A lawyer who previously worked for IVAX, he has been with the company for nine years.

A national search will be conducted for a new chief executive, the company said.

The new chairman of the board is Wayne P. Yetter, 62, currently Noven's lead independent director. Yetter currently serves as chief executive of Verispan. He previously had been head of Novartis Pharmaceuticals and Astra Merck.

In a press release, the company said Strauss, 66, had been planning his retirement for some time. He has been chief executive for the past decade.

Cancer liaison physician at Memorial Healthcare System

Dr. Maury Jayson has been appointed as cancer liaison physician for the cancer program at Memorial Healthcare System, as part of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. He is responsible for providing leadership and direction to help support the healthcare system's cancer programs.

In addition, he serves as vice-chief of surgery at Memorial Hospital Miramar.

Tim Hansen will be retiring as chief executive officer and director of Imaging Diagnostic Systems, a medical technology company located in Plantation.

He was appointed CEO and director in 2004 and his retirement will take effect Jan. 1. No replacement was named in the announcement.

Ralph A. Aleman has been hired as chief executive officer of Hialeah Hospital, a 378-bed acute care hospital owned by Tenet Healthcare Corporation.

He most recently served as vice president and market leader of Tenet’s hospitals in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, a position he held since April 2006.

Interim CEO of Broward General Medical Center

Jane Tuthill has been named interim chief executive officer of Broward General Medical Center. She is replacing outgoing CEO Joe Scott, who recently accepted the position of President/CEO of the Liberty Health System in New Jersey.

She has been with the hospital for more than 30 years and began her career at Broward General in 1975 as a registered nurse. While completing her education, her career continued to advance until most recently as the administrator of the Comprehensive Cancer Center, Chris Evert Children’s Hospital and Heart Center of Excellence.

Broward Health will be conducting a nationwide search for the CEO position.

Dr. Anel Alvarado has been hired as the new chief of surgery at Memorial Hospital Miramar, a full-service, acute-care hospital under the umbrella of Memorial Healthcare System.

Aside from tending to his own private practice at the South Broward Surgical Group, he will work alongside other physicians who form the Medical Executive Committee of Memorial Hospital Miramar. He will be accountable for all clinically related activities and some administrative responsibilities for the Department of Surgery. His term will run through April 2010.

He previously served as Section Chief of General Surgery from May 2003 through April 2007 at Memorial Hospital Pembroke.
