House debates tuition hike

The House debated a Senate bill to increase tuition at the University of Florida and Florida State by 40 percent over several years and by 30 percent at the University of South Florida.

The legislation, pushed by UF, passed the Senate in a 28-10 vote last week. The House will vote later this week.

"Sometimes people value things to the degree they have to pay for them," Rep. David Mealor, a Lake Mary Republican. "All we’re saying right now is we’re an undervalued resource."

Several Democrats questioned whether the bill will place a financial burden on Florida families and its effect on Florida Prepaid and Bright Futures.
