Gay marriage ban organizers within "striking distance"

Backers of a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage say they are "within striking distance" of gathering the more than 611,000 petition signatures needed to get their amendment on the 2008 ballot. John Stemberger of Florida4Marriage.Org said today in an e-mail to supporters that they have received "thousands upon thousands" of petitions this summer. (Full text in comments below)

The deadline to turn in petitions is next year. But Stemberger says they are mounting one last push to get in enough signatures by this September.

Of course, any amendment on the 2008 ballot must now pass by a 60 percent threshold. Voters last year made it harder to amend the constitution.

Dear Florida4Marriage.org Supporter:

I want to thank so many of you who have worked hard and or supported the Florida Marriage Protection Amendment petition collection process. This summer we have received thousands upon thousands of new petitions into our headquarters. While we do not have an exact count, we believe we are well within striking distance of completing the petition goal but not quite there yet. The exact goal is 611,009 valid petitions but we will need several tens of thousands in excess of that number to be official. We are not yet finished untill it is official in Tallahassee.

Because of the passage of time, we will likely have a higher than usual number of petitions that may be invalid so we will not be sure until the final number is posted with the State Division of Elections. All 67 County Supervisors of Elections in Florida are now in the process of validating the petitions we have sent them. Even after the validation process, we still may need more petitions in the various congressional districts which is an additional legal requirement.

So if you were planning on doing one last drive in your church or community, or if you have any more petitions to submit please mail them all into us now but no later than September 1, 2007.

We will keep you updated with the progress of this historical effort as it develops. Thanks again for supporting the most basic institution to any society, natural marriage.

John Stemberger

PS- If you think our efforts are worthy, would you please support us with a small gift? Thank you for caring enough to get involved.

Government budgets and revenues should be based on voter requested services provided and not the value of the taxpayer’s property.

Proposal Summary:

Property taxes shall be assessed as follows with a maximum increase of 3% per year:
• One dollar per square foot of residential homes.
• Five hundred dollars per acre of vacant residential land with a maximum tax.
• Five cents per square foot of residential land less than one acre with a maximum tax.
• Fifty dollars per acre of agricultural land with a maximum tax.
• Freeze taxes on industrial and commercial land and use “comps” for new development assessments.

Major Benefits:

• Puts more money into the economy and promotes new business which brings jobs.
• Encourages development of new properties.
• Saves our financial institutions from bankruptcy.
• Provides affordable housing for seniors, renters and first time homebuyers.
• Allows taxpayers more time for family and social development.
• Provides adequate funding for most local governments.

Equality in taxation is a taxpayer’s right.
