FSU football player: Tasered, arrested, suspended

Two Florida State University football players were suspended Friday by Athletic Director Dave Hart following an early morning incident where the two players were arrested by Tallahassee police. One of the players was Tasered by police, an incident coming just days after a University of Florida student was Tasered by campus police during a speech by U.S. Sen. John Kerry.

"The student athletes have been suspended per our Athletics Department student-athlete code of conduct policy, until all of the facts of the incident are reviewed,'' stated Hart. "We are continuing to gather facts related to the circumstances."

The circumstances, according to police, are that shortly before 2 a.m. they saw FSU starting linebacker Eugene "Geno" Hayes yelling and screaming just outside of Potbelly's, a popular watering hole near campus, and being restrained from going into the bar by several other people.

A bar employee told police that Hayes was involved in an altercation at the bar. TPD Officer Michael Malafronte tried to calm Hayes down, but at one point Hayes allegedly started charging Malafronte and told the cop "I'm going to get your (expletive deleted)." Malafronte pulled out a Taser and pointed it at Hayes, who was then pulled away by his friends. It was after this that another TPD officer attempted to arrest Hayes, who then tried to get away from the officer. While on the ground, police said he resisted getting handcuffed and was Tasered by Malafronte.

It was during this altercation that FSU fullback Joseph Surratt allegedly got involved and was told several times by Officer Michael Petroczky to back up but that Surratt, who broke his leg this past summer, refused. Petroczky then pushed Surratt and tried to arrest him, but Surratt then struck Petroczky, giving the cop a busted lower lip.

Hayes has been charged with three misdemeanors: Disorderly conduct, resisting arrest without violence and assault on a police officer. Surrat has been charged with a felony count of battery on a law enforcement officer.

Actually, this shows you sensationalistic "journalism" at its worst. On the one hand, the "journalist" didn't include all the facts from the POLICE PRESS RELEASE, just those that made the players look the worst. THEN, the "journalist" didn't bother to do five seconds worth of "investigation" to see that Joe Surrat has a broken leg, IN A NONMOBILE CAST, with cruches. So just knowing that fact ALONE (and it's common knowledge "journalist")would make you suspicious of the cop's report alleging that Surrat "ran" towards him, then the cop admits pushing him first, and in the actual police it just said that he was struck while attempting to arrest him. AKA, the cop shoved a guy in crutches first (who eye witnesses said was merely trying to talk the cop out of arresting Geno Hayes), then immediately jumped on him to arrest and got accidentally struck when he jumped on top of Surrat. I just want to say that I was actually there and though geno hayes deserves what he got cause he was acting really drunk and crazy but joe surrat was messed with first and just because he was a football player they went after him. the police did a really good job securing the scene but joe was definitely hit first and he reacted like any other male at college would have. people should realize that when you are a football player and on a team that isn't doing as well as expected, ideots tend to abuse these players .
