The state has agreed to pay $2 million to settle a 12-year-old lawsuit that challenged a $15 fee the state used to charge for disabled parking permits. Under the terms of the settlement, a handful of groups that work with the disabled would split $1 million, while the lawyers who have worked on the case since 1996 would also get $1 million. More here.
Sen. Mike Fasano, the Republican in charge of the Senate budget committee that oversees transporation spending, is already questioning why those who paid for the parking permit shouldn't be the ones to get the money. It will be up to the Legislature to decide whether to fork over the $1 million for the disabled groups.
