Flags at half staff for Rep. Don Davis today

Gov. Charlie Crist has announced that state flags will fly at half-staff today in honor of Rep. Don Davis, who died this morning after a lengthy battle with brain cancer. Davis, 76, had not been in attendance this session.

State House and Senate members acknowledged Davis' death in with a lengthy silence Thursday. His desk in the House chamber was draped in a black cloth.

“It was my honor to serve for eight years in the Florida Legislature with Don Davis,'' House Speaker Marco Rubio said in a statement. "He was a keen student of government and public service, a loving father and  husband, and a gentleman. As colleagues and friends, we mourn his loss and extend our deep sympathy and prayers to his family.”

Said Senate President Ken Pruitt in a statement: "Florida lost a great statesman today with the passing of Representative Don Davis,'' said Senate President Ken Pruitt in a statement. "He loved florida and dedicated his life to serving the state with honor and dignity. My wife Aileen and I extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.''
