More on the Herald's poll in South Florida

This blogger has received a lot of feedback on today's story about a new Miami Herald poll that shows Democrat Barack Obama up by 16 points over Republican John McCain in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. With some time to do a little more math, it looks like Democrat John Kerry won South Florida by 19 points in 2004 -- and still lost the state to President Bush.

But as pollster John Zogby said, the survey only suggests Obama will be competitive in Florida, despite his boycott of the state's presidential primary.

Here's more numbers from the poll: In Miami-Dade, it was 48-32 Obama. In Broward, 48-26 Obama. In Palm Beach, 40-34 Obama. Compare those numbers to 2004: Miami-Dade voted 53-46 for Kerry. Broward voted 64-35 for Kerry. Palm Beach voted 60-39.

So more than four months before the election, Obama's spread is better than Kerry's in Miami-Dade, but smaller than Kerry's in Broward and Palm Beach.

That's better. Obama has a lot of work to do in Florida.Saying he's ahead doesn't make it so.
