Graham advising Obama administration on WMDs
With President-elect Barack Obama preparing to name an official to thwart the spread of nuclear and biological weapons, former U.S. Sen. Bob Graham went on CNN tonight to discuss the threats uncovered by a commission he co-chaired.
The commission is scheduled to brief Vice President-elect Joe Biden tomorrow in Washington. Graham said on CNN tonight that a biological weapon of mass destruction is likely to be set off somewhere in the world by 2013. The biggest threat, he said, is Pakistan.
"It hasn't happened yet because fortunately, thus far, we have been able to keep these materials out of the hands of terrorists,'' he said. "That prospect, however, is getting thinner and thinner as there are more nuclear states with more nuclear sites and materials. Biological materials are becoming ubiquitous around the world. What it will take is a few scientists prepared to become terrorists working with a terrorist organization to convert this possibility into a reality."
Graham, a former chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, was one of the lone voices in Congress against the war in Iraq.
