State Rep. Juan Zapata, R-Miami, today filed a bill (HB 887) to increase the cigarette tax by 65.1 cents per pack, bringing the total to $1 a pack. It could raise $471 million a year.
"The (budget) situation calls for action," said Zapata, who is chair of the Human Services Appropriations Committee. "We can sit here and try to hold true to our principles but at the same time we need to be pragmatic."

So how is this different from the tax that Waldman has been championing? or is a new tax allowed because a Republican proposed it?

no, 4:13pm. Because it's a Republican doesn't make it ok. It makes it worse because Republicans who act like Democrats are traitors. But then again, what can we expect from someone who recruits a friend of the Castro regime to run for his seat? Those details are on http://versaillesbeat.blogspot.com
