Miami Gardens Mayor Shirley Gibson is the latest candidate running to succeed U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, who is vying for a promotion to the U.S. Senate.
Gibson, who was elected mayor six years ago, serves as president of the Miami-Dade League of Cities.
"When I was making this decision, I did not ask myself why me, but instead why not me,'' Gibson says in a written statement.
Gibson joins a five-person Democratic race that includes state Sen. Frederica Wilson, state Rep. Yolly Roberson, and state Rep. Phillip Brutus.
