Mel Martinez to Florida Legislature: Drilling could "really be a mistake"

Mel Martinez in his swan song today touted the 2006 oil drilling deal he and Bill Nelson reached that kept the possibility of oil and gas rigs off Florida's coastline a remote threat.

But the Florida Legislature is looking at bringing exploration close to shore -- within 10 miles.

Asked what he'd tell the folks in Tallahassee, the retiring senator said: "I would say to them, 'Look at what we did. We did something that opened up a lot of drilling but it protected Florida's coast. And I think to do it as close as they are talking about, would really be a mistake."
