With a potentially divisive election for chair of the state party four days away, some Republicans are praying for a last-minute deal between the two leading candidates, state Sen. John Thrasher of St. Augustine -- backed by the top elected officials -- and longtime activist Sharon Day of Fort Lauderdale -- whose support comes only from the grassroots.
Day said "surrogates'' for Thrasher have approached her, as recently as last week. "I have gotten calls and contacts saying, 'How do we avoid an election?' " Day said.
Her response: "My intent is to go to the finish line. Too many people put their name out there and stood beside me. I'm in it to win.''
