Lauren Book, 25, announced at a press conference Monday morning that she had planned a nearly 500-mile walk across the state to raise awareness for sexual abuse victims. Lauren herself was abused as a child.
Lauren is joining her father to advocate for changes to sex offender laws, including a provision that would prohibit offenders from loitering within 300 feet of places where children congregate - no matter the time of day.
Her father was a strong advocate in Miami-Dade for local ordinances that prohibited sex offenders from living within 2,500 feet of any place children congregate. The laws helped to create the creation of a colony of sex offenders under the Julia Tuttle Causeway, which is now in the process of being dismantled.
The walk starts in Aventura on April 2 and will go through Boca Raton, Jupiter, Orlando and Tampa before arriving in Tallahassee on the 20th. She has been walking 20 miles a day with a 20 pound weight on her chest to prepare.
