Some black leaders are starting to take serious issue with Sen. Mike Haridopolos and Rep. Dean Cannon, for saying that they want to protect minority voting rights by proposing a new constitutional amendment for redistricting. The proposal is another effort by the Republican lawmakers to block a Democratic/liberal constitutional amendment by the group FairDistricts that would make it more difficult for legislative leaders (Republicans) to draw political districts for partisan gain.
Leon Russell, past president of the Florida NAACP, said the group backs the FairDistricts amendments and doesn't like the GOP antidote.
"Contrary to the repeated claim made by you and other members of the Legislature who are involved in the redistricting process that you seek to increase minority voting rights, it seems that you actually intend to do the opposite," Russell wrote in a letter to Haridopolos and Cannon. He said their proposed amendment was a "sham."
