Vern Buchanan calls for BP investigation

Sarasota Republican Rep. Vern Buchanan, who yesterday sent a letter to President Obama asking him to reconsider his decision to open more areas offshore to oil drilling, today is asking for the House Committee on Government Oversight and Reform to investigate why British Petroleum received a waiver from conducting a detailed environmental impact report at the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Washington Post reported today that the U.S. Department of Interior gave BP a lease to operate the rig with a "categorical exclusion" from the National Environment Policy Act last year.

In his letter to Obama, Buchanan said that although he agreed with a "focus on making the country more energy independent, the recent disaster off the Gulf Coast is proof that despite its claims, the oil industry is incapable of preventing catastrophic spills from occurring."
