Charlie Crist vetoes abortion bill

UPDATED: As he positions himself to the center in the U.S. Senate race, Gov. Charlie Crist on Friday vetoed a measure requiring most women to pay for an ultrasound and hear a description of the fetus before they can have an abortion.

“This bill places an inappropriate burden on woman seeking to terminate a pregnancy,” Crist said in his veto message.

Anti-abortion advocates and Crist’s Republican critics in the Legislature immediately pounced on the decision. John Stemberger, head of the Florida Family Policy Council, called the veto “profoundly disappointing” and said it’s now “crystal clear that he’s pro-abortion.” Read more here.

Read the veto message here. An interesting note: In the message, Crist appears to separate his personal beliefs (which he previously stated are "pro-life") from his action. "Individuals hold strong personal views on the issue of life, as do I," he wrote. "However, personal views should not result in laws that unwisely expand the role of government and coerce people to obtain medical tests or procedures that are not medically necessary."

Tres

Late term abortion is illegal. How do you establish term without a diagnostic tool like an ultrasound?

How pathetic. Here's a governor who expresses concern about the expanding role of government, but I never heard him complain about Obamacare. Please spare us governor. You complained all week that it troubled you that an "organized" group of people were flooding your office with messages to sign the bill into law. What, their voices don't count. Who are "The People" you supposedly represent? I guess it didn't bother you too much when the teachers union organized and demanded that you veto SB 6. No trouble there, guv. It's a sorry state of affairs how you play this shell game.

Charlie Crist just messed up big time. All he has are moderates. Democrats for Life were supporting Charlie Crist because he is a prolife moderate. But, now he proves that he is just a politician playing politics as usual. He just forced us to support Marco Rubio because Meek is prochoice.

Charlie Crist you are officially a "politician". Congratulations come up and receive your diploma.

Not voting Crist anymore!

And now we hear from the people who feel the government has the power to require people to undergo medical procedures because they want the government to keep people from having legal abortions. OK with them if the government is forcing people to have tests that are unnecessary, since they want everyone to conform to their rules, even if it means having the state enforce their rules on everyone
