Carlos Curbelo, who worked on Republican campaigns for Congress, governor and president before he got hired last year by U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, is taking on his first school board campaign -- with himself as the candidate.
Curbelo, 30, is running for the Miami-Dade School Board seat to be vacated by Ana Rivas-Logan. The Miami-born Curbelo has worked for U.S. Reps. Lincoln and Mario Diaz-Balart, Gov. Charlie Crist and former presidential nominees John McCain and Fred Thompson. Curbelo, who is Cuban-American, specializes in Hispanic media strategy.
Curbelo said his goal if elected would be to "pre-empt" the controversial legislation vetoed by Crist that would have largely stripped teachers of their tenure.
"We should be doing our own reforms here and including parents and teachers,'' he said. "We're for local control and then we can tell Tallahassee that we don't need them to get involved."
