David Rivera getting Collier County love

He may be under fire in Miami-Dade for his chairmanship of the local Republican Party, but state Rep. David Rivera felt the love from the neighboring -- and more conservative -- Collier County Monday night.

Rivera, who is running for U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart's 25th congressional district seat, received the backing of Collier's GOP and won a straw poll at the Golden Gate Civic Association after several Golden Gate groups held a candidate forum. He received 113 votes in the poll, with the second-place Republican, Paul Crespo, receiving 34. The Democratic front runner, Joe Garcia, came in second place with 92 votes.

“On Monday, Collier Republicans and the people at the Golden Gate Civic Association forum spoke loud and clear," Rivera said in a statement. "They want a Congressman who will fight to fix Washington and who will focus on issues of concern."

Florida's 25th district stretches from Miami Lakes to Homestead in Miami-Dade and west to close to Naples in Collier.
