A day before Univision's Senate debate, Kendrick Meek is underscoring his support for the DREAM Act -- legislation that could help young people in the U.S. illegally become residents.
"The contrast couldn't be clearer: I am the only candidate who supports the DREAM Act to give all our children the opportunities they need to succeed, while my opponents want to shut the door to citizenship, even for our young men and women in uniform," Meek said.
He's also calling on Gov. Charlie Crist's hand-picked successor, Sen. George LeMieux to vote for the measure -- which Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says could come up for a vote as soon as next week. Here's the letter Meek sent to LeMieux.
Students are also pressuring LeMieux, holding a demonstration and vigil today outside his Miami office. He said earlier this week he wants to see the language of the legislation before deciding.
"This is the moment we have been waiting for so long. Senator LeMieux will hear our voice and we know he will represent us in Congress by voting for the DREAM Act", said Gabriela Mejía, a member of Students Working for Equal Rights and a graduate of the Honors College at Miami Dade College.
