After skipping dinner in his honor, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen confronts Chinese president

The chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee -- who skipped last night's state dinner at the White House -- got a chance today to explain why -- in person.

At a bi-partisan Congressional meeting with Hu Jintao, Ros-Lehtinen said she handed him a copy of the letter she sent to President Obama highlighting her "grave concerns regarding the Chinese regime's deplorable human rights record and detention of a U.S. citizen; its economic policies, such as currency manipulation, which are costing American jobs and hurting the U.S. economy; and its aggressive and irresponsible behavior which threatens U.S. security interests and global stability."

She said she got an opportunity at the end of the meeting to ask Hu to free Liu Xiaobo, Gao Zhisheng, and other dissidents, "to respect the rights of the Tibetan and Uyghur people, to end the persecution of the underground Christians and Falun Gong practitioners, and to end China’s policy of forced abortion."

She said the only issue that drew a response was her urging the end to forced abortions: "I was astonished when he insisted that such a policy does not exist," she said.
