The Associated Press is calling it for Democrat Kathy Hochul in an upstate New York congressional race that was expected to be a cake walk for Republicans.
But Democrats -- who sought to make the race a referendum on a GOP-backed budget plan that revamps Medicare -- hammered the Republican in the race for supporting the Ryan budget plan. Republicans pulled out the big guns: Florida tea party favorites Allen West and Marco Rubio each made robocalls on behalf of the GOP candidate -- who was easily expected to retain the seat.
Democrats hail the race as a harbinger for 2012 -- and as proof that House Republicans overstretched when all but four voted for the Ryan budget plan.
"Congrats to Congresswoman-Elect Kathy Hochul (D-NY26)!," new national Democratic party chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz tweeted. "U ran a great race! TY 2 volunteers! Voters stand up 4 Medicare!"
