The trial lawyer that Rick Scott likes

When Gov. Rick Scott made some judicial nominating commission appointments last week, the news was how he bounced two lawyers: the partner of former Sen. George LeMieux and the husband of the backer of the liberal-leaning Fair Districts amendments.

Something else was worthy of note, say those in the legal community. On July 18, he reappointed lobbyist wunderkind Jason L. Unger (no news there) but he also tapped Rutledge R. Liles to the Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission.

"Liles, 69, of Jacksonville, is the president of Liles, Gavin, Costantino, George and Dearing P.A.  He succeeds Robert Hackleman and is appointed for a term beginning July 18, 2011, and ending July 1, 2015," a press release said.

"Liles has more than 45 years of experience in business and commercial litigation, professional malpractice, insurance disputes, product liability, personal injury and wrongful death, and intellectual property litigation, state and federal appeals, medical malpractice, construction litigation, premises liability, and contract disputes.  He was president-elect of the Florida Bar from 1987 to 1988 and president from 1988 to 1989, following six years as a member of the Board of Governors. He is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the International Society of Barristers and the American Board of Trial Advocacy.  A United States Marine Corps veteran, he received his bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and his law degree from the University of Florida."

Bottom line: He's a trial lawyer. And a damn good one.

He's also an activist, who opposed to so-called "bad faith" laws supported by Republicans, including Rick Scott. Check out the editorials here and here.

haha thank you

Lobbyist wunderkind??? are you kidding? Unger is a catch-the-swell sorta guy. Never came up with an original thought in his life.

Wow

Who said there isn't Christmas in July? Trial Lawyers just got their biggest gift since WD Childers snuck one past Big Tobacco in 1994. Tort reform people probably don't even know what the JNC is. This is pretty comical.
