Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike McCalister wasted no time today jumping on news that he leads the pack of primary challengers hoping to take on Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in 2012.
In a "Dear Patriot" letter, McCalister sets a goal of raising $15,000 online. He also includes an "Interested Parties" memo from consultants Buzz Jacobs and John Yob.
"Now, the whole world knows what we’ve known all summer," the pair wrote. "Mike McCalister’s outsider message is resonating with conservatives throughout Florida."
Here's the letter:
Today, Quinnipiac University released a poll showing me in first place in the Florida Republican Primary.
Your support made that strong showing possible. Thank you for everything you are doing to help my campaign.
Now, we need to continue to build on this momentum. In order to remain competitive, I need to immediately raise $15,000 to continue to spread our conservative message online. I don't like asking for your hard earned money, especially in these tough times, but I need your financial support to remain competitive against my well-funded establishment opponents.
Please contribute and ask five of your friends to donate to my campaign so we can keep this early momentum going. Every $25, $50, or $100 contribution (or whatever you can afford) will go a long way in helping my campaign.
I sincerely appreciate your consideration and continued support.
Very respectfully -
Colonel Mike McCalister (RET)
P.S. I've included a memo from my campaign, which you can share with your family and friends.

Subject: Now the World Knows What We’ve Known All Summer
Today, Quinnipiac University released a poll showing Colonel Mike McCalister leading the Republican Primary race in Florida.
Now, the whole world knows what we’ve known all summer. Mike McCalister’s outsider message is resonating with conservatives throughout Florida. The Colonel is the Republican establishment’s worst nightmare – an outsider candidate who is willing to stand up to special interest insiders and do what’s right for America.
While most of the mainstream media has been ignoring Colonel McCalister, he has been traveling the Sunshine State speaking to Tea Party, 9/12, and Republican groups. He has consistently been well received – winning or finishing near the top of every straw poll this summer. Additionally, he received an explosion of online support from across the country following his speech to the Republican Leadership Conference in June. This growing support is consistent with what we’ve seen on other winning Tea Party campaigns.
Before 2010, campaigns were mostly won and financed by large donation contributors who participated in shadow primaries to award establishment support to a candidate. The candidate who won the special interest's support usually became the nominee of the Party. This all changed in 2010, when the candidates who won primaries across the country were those that inspired grassroots conservatives and small dollar contributors. These candidates raised millions through effective Internet and direct mail campaigns.
Colonel McCalister will continue to be the beneficiary of substantial grassroots support – especially as more people begin to tune into the race. He is tapping into the same anti-establishment discontent that is weighing down the campaigns of the Tallahassee Twins. The Tallahassee Twins may be the frontrunners in the eyes of the big money and special interest GOP establishment, but more grassroots conservatives identify with Colonel McCalister’s message and experience.
Conservatives who want to break the status quo aren’t going to send a political insider to Washington when they can choose a hard charging Colonel who will take on the political establishment.
