NBC: Mitt Romney, tear down this ad. Yet NBC keeps running it, getting paid

NBC doesn't like the fact that Mitt Romney's campaign is using some of its footage in the latest Newt Gingrich-basher. Will Romney pull it?

From NBC: "The NBC Legal Department has written a letter to the campaign asking for the removal of all NBC News material from their campaign ads. Similar requests have gone out to other campaigns that have inappropriately used Nightly News, Meet the Press, Today and MSNBC material."

Statement from Tom Brokaw: Speaking for himself, Brokaw said: "I am extremely uncomfortable with the extended use of my personal image in this political ad. I do no want my role as a journalist compromised for political gain by any campaign."

**UPDATE But perhaps NBC should send the letter to its own South Florida affiliate as well. Shortly after this post, Fort Lauderdale real estate agent Tweeted this observation: "@TomBrokaw Against your express wishes, NBC Miami is running your Romney ad right now. Demand that NBC stop running it if you are serious."

So NBC is in high-dudgeon about the use of its material. But it'll keep airing ads like this because money talks louder than self-important puffery about TV journalistic standards

Incredulous

How sad. So many of you silly people are so trapped in your little mind cages. Both parties are corrupted to the core and from top to bottom. You keep voting and discussing these people like they have any of your, much-less Americans best interest in mind. You may as well be discussing the newest Ronald McDonald character representative... At least then you know you are discussing a clown. ~Smirk~

Brokaw should be thrilled with the Romney campaign running this ad...it's the only credible reporting Brokaw ever did!

Jim in Houston

Uncle Tom should have stopped when he wrote that terrific book "The Greatest Generation".

Don't the call letters NBC mean "Nobody Cares"?

tc297

The white house probably ordered them to complain.

American Captain

What a minute! This is done in every campaign for as long as there has been TV. I don't recall hearing NBC complaining when their local newscast were used like this. Is it because Tom Brokaw thinks he is so important? Is it because NBC wants to do the same in an eventual general election where their "anti-Fox News" network MSNBC will demonstrate that they can be as unjournalistic as the other clowns?

ERtwngr

Brokaw and NBC are embarrassed because the ad exposes their political bias. The report about Gingrich was inaccurate and they never corrected the record when Gingrich was exonerated on most of the charges. But it suited their anti-GOP agenda at the time. Now it's coming back to bite them and they are feigning indignity while taking the money.

"I do no want my role as a journalist compromised for political gain by any campaign."

Brokaw is joking , right? Aside from the obvious debate whether anyone who works for NBC or MSNBC is truly a journalist....

Let's look at the statement closely. Brokaw and Co., firmly in the tank for Obama for the past 4 years, are standing on shaky ground when they wail that they don't want their "role" as a "journalist" compromised.

I guess they don't feel like being a lap dog for Obama is compromising their "role" as "journalists"?

Hard to believe.

Perhaps NBC just needs a little juice in an effort to bolster their pitiful TV ratings.

I like Tom Brokow but Tom that comes with the territory when you agreed to be the newscaster and read the news to the public. You knew that when you took the job. And as far as I can tell, you you were happy to have that job. Your only contribution by your complaint is to get the ad displayed and reported on, without cost, via the news cycle. I'm sure the Romney team is delighted.

stoptouchingthatmabel

The problem is that NBC isn't use to fact based reporting so it has thrown them for a loop. Someone will explain this to the employees there and they will once again continue on as they have done for decades, bias and oblivious.

Tom Brokejaw

Because BrokeJaw is a liberal sissy boy and everyone knows it.

I hope not!

As manager and board member of Damon Corporation, Mitt Romney sits at the center of one of the top 15 corporate crimes of the 1990's.

I don't get why anyone would not be for Newt's "moon base" concept. If we are to explore other areas of our solar system, the moon is the launching pad. He also clearly invites public companies to promote and invest in this venture. This will happen someday whether it happens now or in the future. Why not get kids excited again in science and creative imagination? My generation was with the Apollo moon landings. Why would anyone be against that? Perhaps the ones that will do it if we don't in China and India.

ILJ

It is ILLEGAL for NBC to pull the ad due to campaign law. They have to run all candidates ads as-is or none, and since they've already run other ads....really bad, poor reporting in this blog.

Milkman

Who knows how to get things done by working with both democrats and republicans? Who was largely responsible for balancing the budget and keeping the deficit in check? Who is the most intelligent candidate with fresh ideas and the ability to turn things around quickly? The US is floundering and we need a man that will turn this around quickly. I voted for Obama last time but I am voting this time for the guy that is the best one to get us back on the right track. Gingrich is the obvious choice.

Romney unloads on Newt
over debates, Freddie work

Mitt Romney slammed Newt Gingrich for his role working for federal housing agency Freddie Mac [ .... ]

"You know, [ Speaker Gingrich ] is now finding excuses everywhere he can. He’s on TV this morning going from station to station complaining about what he thinks are the reasons he had difficulty here in Florida. But you know we’ve got a president who has a lot of excuses, and the excuses are over, it’s time to produce."
[ .... ]

"... I know how bad housing is here, how tough its been. You know that one quarter of all the foreclosures in America are in Florida? And you know how much home values have gone down. And one of the greatest contributors to the collapse of housing here and across the country was government, and the intrusion of government into the housing market and the fact that you have Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae guaranteeing mortgages in some cases to people who couldn’t possibly pay them back, that contributed to the kind of crisis you’ve seen here.

And at the time some people were standing up and saying we need to reform the system, Speaker Gingrich was being paid $1.6 million to stand up and do what he did, which is to say these programs should continue the way they are. These institutions are fine.
The people of Florida have had enough of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and government interference and its time to get back to free market principles."

"So Mr. Speaker, ... Your problem in Florida is that you worked for Freddie Mac at a time that Freddie Mac was not doing the right thing for the American people. And that you were selling influence in Washington at a time when we needed people to stand up for the truth in Washington."

COUP attempt against Gingrich

Newt did not take the REBELLION lying down.

Gingrich’s precipitous fall from power

__________________________________________

I first met Newt Gingrich 17 years ago at a Destin, Fla., fundraiser held in my honor ....

If, as Shakespeare wrote, what’s past is prologue — and it often is —

then Gingrich’s political history is particularly relevant now.

It’s a history I know well because I was there.....

Three years into his speakership, the man who helped
draft the Contract With America began trying to undo
some of that document’s key provisions. ...

In April 1997, Gingrich ... was ready to be a kinder and gentler Republican
by negotiating away the very tax cuts that he had once called
“the crown jewels of the contract.”

Soon, conservatives were being pressured to vote for big spending appropriations bills.

In his final speech from the floor of Congress,
Newt Gingrich lashed out wildly at the same freshmen
who had made him speaker — mocking us as cannibals ...

It was the last time Newt would attack
the most conservative members of his caucus
from the lofty perch as speaker.

In 1997, ten of my fellow classmates had
led a coup attempt against Gingrich,
shutting down the House over the speaker’s efforts
to violate the Contract with America ....

Conservative stalwarts like Steve Largent, Tom Coburn
and Matt Salmon joined me and seven others
to demand a cut in spending and a promise to hold firm on tax cuts.

Newt did not take the rebellion lying down.
He immediately summoned the sergeant of arms
to drag the 11 rebels down to a Republican caucus meeting ...
where Newt lined us up in front of a packed room of seething House members ...
Gingrich then began screaming and demanded that the 11 of us account for our behavior.

As Steve Largent grabbed the microphone, ...
Steve spoke softly about how he signed a contract with the Seattle Seahawks ....
A few years later, the NFL Players Association went on strike. But Largent told the mob, who were now transfixed, that he crossed those picket lines because he signed a contract and gave his word. ....
For Steve, it was a matter of principle.

Turning to the Speaker, ... Largent said, “Newt, you were the one
who drafted the contract and then told us to sign it.
Now, you’re the one pressuring us to break it.

But Newt, if I wasn’t intimidated by the thought of 250 pound linebackers
who wanted to kill me every time I crossed the field,
why would I be intimidated by you?”

And with that, the speakership of Newt Gingrich was over.

A year later, he would be driven from power
and sent into a political wilderness
from which he emerged 14 years later on a Saturday night in South Carolina.

Gingrich’s precipitous fall from power was the result of arrogance, ...
a fatal tendency to flit from issue to issue — and even from core conviction
to core conviction — in the seeming belief that if ....

Mr. Caputo: Self-important puffery? An example of that might be Brokaw's exploitation of what he calls the "greatest generation," to further his own interests, monetary and otherwise. As a member of that generation--W.W.II disabled combat veteran--I resent his opportunistic raid on a good generation (which was not all that "great") for his own purposes.
