Rubio scolds Gingrich camp, says ad bashing 'anti-immigrant' Romney is 'inaccurate, inflammatory'

Sen. Marco Rubio scolded Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign over a Spanish-language radio ad that accuses rival Mitt Romney of being “anti-immigrant”

“This kind of language is more than just unfortunate. It’s inaccurate, inflammatory, and doesn’t belong in this campaign,” Rubio told The Miami Herald when asked about the ad.

“The truth is that neither of these two men is anti-immigrant,” Rubio said. “Both are pro-legal immigration and both have positive messages that play well in the Hispanic community.”

Rubio’s sharp rebuke comes a day after he subtly corrected Gingrich for comparing Romney to former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, branded by conservatives as a turncoat who left the party before Rubio beat him in 2010.

The criticisms from someone of Rubio’s stature in the Republican Party comes as polls show a near-even race, albeit with Gingrich surging.

Rubio plans to stay neutral in the race. He’s a potential running mate whom both candidates would love to have on the ballot. And he’s gaining iconic status among many national Republicans who see him as a face of the future in a nation that’s growing more Latino.

Miami, Rubio's hometown, is a key battleground. The candidates are all wooing the Cuban-exile community here, which accounts for nearly three-quarters of the Republican vote in the largest county of the nation’s largest swing state.

Already, about 54,000 early ballots have been cast in Miami Dade, where nearly three-quarters of the Republicans are Hispanic.

Rubio’s statement was fueled by the explosive, partisan debate over immigration, a key issue this election season as both parties aggressively court the Hispanic vote.

Democrats and liberals have tried to paint the Republican candidates as anti-immigrant or even anti-Hispanic for opposing legislation such as the DREAM Act, which provides a path to citizenship for some illegal immigrants – mainly college students and soldiers.

Rubio, who frets that the DREAM Act gives too much “amnesty” to a broader class of immigrants, and other Republicans have accused Democrats of playing rank ethnic politics.

So when Gingrich’s radio spot described Romney as “the most anti-immigrant candidate,” Rubio and others felt he not only crossed the line – he was adopting liberal criticisms.

Gingrich's attempt to link Romney to Crist is a joke. It’s one thing to employ folks for their technical and functional skills on a campaign; it’s another to strongly oppose true conservative candidates vs. the RINO incumbents they defeated, as Gingrich has. Clear examples:

Supported liberal Republican nominee Dede Scozzafava (who supported Obama’s stimulus plan and the pro-union “card check” proposal, etc.)

Openly campaigned for U.S. Senator Robert Bennett in Utah, whom Gingrich’s wrongly called “a true-blue conservative.”

Aggressively supported and campaigned for liberal Congressman Wayne Gilchrist (R-MD) when he faced a conservative challenge from now-Congressman Andy Harris.

Backed liberal Congressman Joe Schwarz (R-MI) when he was challenged by conservative now-Congressman Tim Walberg.

This is a telling and troublesome pattern, which was the same as when Gingrich “hedged” backing Rubio. The desperate Gingrich-to-steal-Florida is now trying the same tactics with immigration. Dispicable!

Here are some facts for Mr. Rubio. First and foremost, if you are from Cuba, then you are considered a political refugee and will be allowed to remain in the United States. Secondly, If you are a Mexican, then you are nothing more than an illegal and will be sent back. Mr. Rubio can get on his high horse if he chooses, but the water is very deep and very different for each side.

I do not think that Romney is anti-immigrant - his stance on legal immigration is OK. However, his idea that people will self-deport is the most ridiculous concept. We are talking about a mini-nation of illegals that live under the table, paid in cash for their work, and purposefully under the radar of the law. Besides, do you really think that these people are going to willingly return to Mexico without formal deportation? Has anyone been keeping up with Mexico lately? More deaths than Afghanistan and more corruption and violence than all of the middle east.

Newt is our man, and I assure you is much more revered in the Hispanic community than Mittens.

Not sure if Newt is truly a Reagan conservative? Take it from someone who knows, Ronald Reagan's son, Michael Reagan: "Newt became a leading ally of my father, Ronald Reagan. He helped Congress push through massive tax cuts. He worked to secure a military buildup that helped defeat the Soviet Union. Under his leadership Congress also limited the welfare state... As a leader in the Reagan Revolution, Gingrich began to confront both Democrats and Republicans in Congress for their cozy insider deals... Gingrich led the most reform-minded Congress in America... He has helped keep my father's legacy alive."

Romney says he plans to send all illegal immigrants packing no matter their ties to America or lack of ties to their country of origin. But Romney wouldn't be able to look in the eye one of the illegal immigrants that lives in America with American citizen children and grandchildren and maybe no family in Mexico or other country of origin and tell them to abandon their family here and move back to what might well be a strange country forever. Surely Romney is not that heartless.

All of those saying they'd deport the Americanized long term illegal immigrant without hesitiation are lying or inhumane.

Mr. Rubio, Newt had the best idea on the matter and Romney the cruelest idea.

Get in Jeb, its time now.

Mark Matis

Sounds like Senator Rubio is channeling Jeb! The more I see of him, the more I regret voting for him last election. His heritage is Cuba, but he voted FOR the NDAA? The stench is overwhelming.

I have read most of the posts on todays
Washington Times. Out of all the write-ins there were only a few which were factual and made sense. Now I am reading the inputs of the writers to the Miami Herald and find that the subjects are handled fair and the intelligence of the writers far surpass those of the Washington Times. It is unbelieving how people can stoop so low to attack other personally. Shame on most of the Washing times posters.

Tony N

There is no way Romney can argue around Obama on the Income Inequality charge of Obama's because Romney is only advising what Obama is dividing the nation over , Romney says he wants everyone to have what he has but that can't happen with the current tax Code , so Newt can Come into the Middle of this argument and make the case for his Flat tax Reform !!!!

NEWT can take the Tax Code Reform Argument to Obama better than Mitt Romney because of this Video

Romney cant be trusted ..he says what ever he thinks is a must to get the vote...he did take a very strong position against RICK PERRY ON educations for illegals, who came into this country ..as babies, those here twenty five years or so and ROMNEY.. across as a pompas ass.

Scott M 1207

Sybil Gingrich is tearing this party apart and is not fit to run this country. He drafted Obama's most potent advertisement against Romney in his attack on Bain and the philosophy of free markets, yet spouts what free marketers want to hear when it's convenient for him. If you want four more years of Obamunism, hook your wagon to this loser. With Romney we get a steady, positive outlook and campaign and a reliable running mate like Rubio, who will be groomed for 2020, and then we vote in conservatives in to congress to give Romney cover from the neo-commie media.

Ralph Andrew

The mere fact that Obama still has a 50% favorable rating tells me how stupid Americans are.

pat barker

LISTEN UP REPUBS...Dems, lib/DNC/Obama-soros want Romney. They don't want to run against/debate Newt.

If Romey were to get the nomination, EVERY tenant, every doctrinal beliefs of the cultic Mormon religion would be on display for all to see in the Obama controlled media!!!

Mitchell Smith

It's official... I now hate Gingrich more than I hated McCain in '08. If any of my fellow republicans think Gingrich has one iota of a chance of beating Obama, you're as crazy as Ron Paul.

ok ok i get it...those that think mitwit is a conservative are the same dimwits who think islam is a religion of peace

Rubio does not represent any real US citizen. He represents the country of Cuba and the Cubans in Miami who have no intention of Americanizing themselves.

Tony N

Mitt Romney has made all his Money over the years mostly from Out sourcing the US Manufacturing Industrial base of Jobs so how can he say he will Reverse what made him RICH off the loses of the working class Americans ?

How does President Obama say he wants More Manufacturing in the USA when His CZAR John Holder and the Environmentalists Marxist Organizations are De-Developing the USA ???? http://cnsnews.com/node/75388

Obama says technology has killed Job Growth so how does he say this then pivot to say he wants a Return of Manufacturing ???

Obama says technology has killed Job Growth ,
How tech improvements can harm the work force

MIT's Eric Brynjolfsson joins Morning Joe to discuss his new e-book "Race Against the Machine," which looks at how improved technology can have a harmful effect on workers.

I swore I wouldn't vote 3rd party and thus give way to another Obama term but if Gingrich is the nominee I will definitely consider it. He will be just as bad for this country as Obama.

Now, if only Rubio would rebuke Romney for falsely claiming Gingrich resigned in disgrace.

Since we're talking fairness here.

I hadn't really considered voting for Grinch until Princess Pelosi opened her mouth. Now I would not only vote for him I would chsnge my party affliaion to Democrat, just to be a Dem that voted against Obama.

jorge perez

rubio is a big dumb cuban dickhead!!!!!!

I like Mitt's idea of self deportation a lot! Heavily Fine comps that hire illegals! Make everyone go through e-verify to insure citizen/immigrant status. And anybody who doesn't speak a semblance of English is SUSPECT and better have their papers on them else shipped immediately back to place of origin!

The more Rubio opens his mouth, the less I like him. Either endorse the establishment liberal Romney, endorse the maverick Newt, endorse the religious Santorum, or just shut up. I cannot stand wishy washy politicians who do not have the courage to pick one side openly because they are too scared to be wrong. Man up, Rubio.

So Rubio is officiating this thing now? Is he going to sort through Romneys ads and correct all the mistruths there?

Is Gingrich was a lobbyist for Freddie/Fannie why did Boehner invite him to speak to Republicans in 2008 to urge them to vote AGAINST the fannie/freddie bailout?

Speaking of Boehner, he was one of the two men leading the coup against Gingrich. Then Boehner and pals went on to serve many years in the biggest spending congress ever. We would have been better if Newt had remained.

It's a shame when one politician hand washes the other politician to disparage another of his own party. Is Rubio a conservative or just another rino supporting the guy that supported him ? I'm not sure but I do know they flip flop as Rubio did this morning on Fox..

@ Edward Boothe

Who's Saul Lewinsky? Monica's dad?

hector ortiz

im tired of hearing all of these politicians that couldn't or wouldn't run for president hating on the candidates. Just shut up and stand behind whoever the American people elect.

Bradley Allen

So amazing the comments by some people who say they would not let Gingrich be president, they would vote for Obama? I wonder if this is a hard line Obama supporter kind of statement pretending to be thinking of the GOP vote, or someone who really hates Newt, albeit in extreme ignorance of the facts.

Mitt Romney belongs to a cult that says he can earn his own planet and be a god over that planet if he stays loyal to the LDS. This is a fact not speculation. This means Romney is loyal to the president of the LDS cult and MUST do whatever that cult leader orders him to do, OR? he faces losing his future planet, godship status and in fact goes to hell. So the only person who could not take an oath of office as we humans know it, is Mitt Romney. He already belongs to a cult that can take away his planet, which is just like another religion that offers 72 virgins to the person who does the biggest thing for their cause.

It violates our form of government to elect a person who already swore an oath to another man that can supercede and usurp any lesser oath, like the oath of office of president. It is not possible for Mitt Romney to be a Mormon while upholding his oath of office, faithfully. It would mean the actual president becomes the president of the LDS cult; and by the way, thats a cult that rejects the bible, rejects Christ while promoting the big lie, that its a kind of Christian religion.

Marco Rubio probably knows some things about immigration issues, so Id like to know what he says specifically; the far fringe right says Newt is in favor of opening up the borders and giving amnesty to all illegals? which of course is a lie. But look at what happened to California, we had 2 GOP candidates, Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner who attacked each other on things like immigration, casting lies at the other side and we got Jerry Brown-D as Gov again.

Julio Sulbaran

Mr Rubio... Other latino/hispanic immigrants have the same right to receive an immigration policy benefit like your cuban community has received from the United States. So, let's the congress and house of representative approve the DREAM ACT and other favorable immigration policies in benefit to immigrants that have been in this country working very hard and building a future in the same way your cuban community has been doing it. If your cuban immigrant community receives very easly the green card when coming to the United States, I believe you should be supporting and helping other latino/hispanic immigrant communities to reach their american and immigration dreams because your cuban immigrant community is not the only one that deserves that benefit from the United States of America. In addition, keep in mind that most of latino/hispanic and other immigrant's groups have not legalized their immigration status since the United States does not offer too many options to someone comeing and staying in this country. Nobody wants to be in an ilegal situation. The United States should do something similar than Canada for instance that allows people around the world to live in that country by following an immigration process based on professional and merit standards, and proving more options to live there. Please, be more sensitive and rational.

As much as I like this young man I feel he and the RNC both know he is a " future " star and is is making his bed for the future by winning their support he feels he might need one day.

I don't care what Rubio is saying...My vote is for Newt.

Linda Castillo

Those of you who think that Newt can take Obama out are CRAZY! A vote for Newt is four more years of Obama in the White House...

you said "He’s a potential running mate whom both candidates would love to have on the ballot"

While I do think either candidate would appreciate Rubio's endorsement, I'm not quite as confident about the desire to have him on the ballot (as either runningmate or opponent)

Professor Sudz

I love all you parrots that say Rubio should be VP without knowing anything about him besides the fact that your Radio tells you that he should be VP.

Please name your 5 favorite pieces of legislation that he has penned for the rest of us that don't know him well enough to just assume he should be VP just because the noise machine says so.

Jeremy Spieller

Rip him all he wants it's not like democracy will prevail. The next election is shaping up to be as big of a sham as the last. Do you know why Sarah Palin's bus tour was really canceled? Do you know why she stayed 30 miles away from the second debate and chose the death of Steve Jobs to announce that she's not running? Know what leaked out? Sarah Palin and Cain aren't in the race for the same reason, the truth leaked out.

mike pedrick

Hey goo obama,
What system do you want you commie puke. Why don't you take your 99% buddies(all 10 of them)
and move to a commie country. It doesn't matter who we run they will beat your idiot so quit trolling our boards and go help your mommy.

You Gingrich fools think because a man knows how to debate well will make a good president. Being a President is governing not debating as we saw with this fool obama. Obama gave great speeches but is clearly in over his head as President

Bradley Allen

The Democrats fear Newt by far more than Romney, they now see how America is going for Newt over Romney and this is a train they cannot stop. Hence Nancy Pelosi once again showing her cards saying that she will not let Newt be president by casting a veiled threat at the former Speaker of the House.

Not long ago Pelosi said she wants the GOP to pick Romney, because obviously once the dirt comes out about the cult Romney belongs to, Americans will reject the LDS candidate like the plague.

But with Newt rising in the polls, and having ALL OF THE DIRT against Newt having been used in the public square, Newt can debate his way to victory. Santorum and Ron Paul could also probably win because they are the NOT-Obama candidate; but the left has documentaries lined up on people like Warren Jeffs the infamous LDS cult leader.

Those folks saying Newt is evil personnified? how would you know? what reference do you use?

Newt or Santorum or Ron Paul can win. Romney cannot.

Tony N

Obama would really be able to say Romney is trying to BUY the Whitehouse , he would not have that claim with NEWT

All that needs to be said is that which needs to be understood: Nominee Newt = President-re-elect Barack Obama.

I like Newt fine. It's just that he's always been more effective as an advocate than as an operator. IF that were not the case, he would not have been thrown out as Speaker. He's good at broad generalizations which speak to philosophical truths or angles, but he's sloppy everywhere else. Just see his failure to get on the ballot in Virginia and Missouri.

Where I dislike Newt is in his moneymaking from the fringes of politics. I'm not even necessarily talking about Freddie and Fannie, the healthcare companies and his climate change lobbying. I'm talking about the speaking circuit, the book tour. His campaign started out as a book tour on a cruise ship. This is why his staffers left in droves, because he wasn't serious about running.

Newt is infamous for doing things that enrich himself. Just look back to his NBC interview when he was talking about how inevitable it was that he will be the Nominee. He said the word 'nominee' 5 times in 14 seconds. He knows he cannot be president. He is running for the title of GOP Nominee. Why? Book sales increase and his speaking fees go up. He knows he cannot win the presidency, and he doesn't care because being The Nominee is more than he could've dreamed of to begin with. It's like a lifetime achievement consolation prize for him. Plus, since conservatives are the group who tossed him out, it'd be like sweet revenge to magically capture their votes today despite having the very infractions they hated about Bill Clinton only to hand them a defeat and 4 more Obama years.

I reiterate that I like Newt the Advocate, but loath Newt the politician. He's too play-for-pay, too steeped in lobbyism. I admire him in debates--he's very skilled, very sharp; but debates unfortunately are not just where he shines, but they are his high-watermark. Against Obama, at most, there will be only 3 debates. So maybe 5 hoursworth over a long campaign. That's a drop in the bucket in the value of any campaign. If you think George W Bush nailed Kerry for being a flip-flopper, just wait and see how Newt gets his coffin cemented in even greater fashion: for Rockefeller, then for Goldwater; against climate change, then for it, now against it again; for universal hillarycare, then against it, then for individual mandate, then against it now.

Ironically, he is to the left of Romney on many issues (healthcare, taxes, free markets, education), yet he's managed to get, in South Carolina at least, 'conservatives' to back him just because of his rhetorical ability to soothsay. Sound familiar? We got a guy like taht now in the White House.

Angry Old Fart

Rubio says he wants to be neutral but blasts Newt twice in the last few days. Rubio should learn a lesson from Governor Haley of South Carolina. She jumped on the Romney boat and will have no chance of re-election now without Tea Party Support!

Michael Wong

This is what a "hurry come up" politician behave. Rubio knows so little and yet
want to be a "big shot". Would someone kindly tell him to shut his mouth and
leave important matters to the people who have the experince.

When a guy named GOOBAMA is telling republicans to vote for Newt so that Obama will get reelected...consider the source. They want you to believe that Newt can't win a general election, but really are afraid that Newt will tear Obama up in the pres debates, enlighten independents to the path out of this mess, and defeat Obama in the general election.
Listen to him and simply realize what he is trying to do. They want to face Romney in the general election - that is who they have been preparing for.

David B

Keep in mind that anti-immigrant in Cuban Miami has nothing to do with the national argument over immigration. Romney refused to address the wet sand, dry sand question at the debates, and that disturbed me more than a little.

It is the left who sent Elian Gonzalez back to Cuba, and the right who wanted him to stay with his uncles here.

Now Rubio knows this!! He is confusing the issue of asylum for Cuban refugees from Castro's communist government. In a Spanish ad the word for people who make it to the Florida shore is inmigración.

Another one bites the dust.

Mark Matis

Heh. Can't say anything negative about Rubio or Jeb! or they'll remove it!

Tony N

If both left and Right Establishment Elite are all flipping over backwards at NEWT and are ALL supporting a Romney candidacy then that tells me NEWT would BUST UP the LOG Jam on Power and Control over Money as these Elite establishment Politicians keep passing Laws that End Liberty in Washington DC that these Establishment Elite have created FOR Themselves , think about it when you watch this video .....

Rubio is simply correcting the NEGATIVE NEWT, who acts like he is a quiet, innocent fella, but inside seems hateful.
