Rubio scolds Gingrich camp, says ad bashing 'anti-immigrant' Romney is 'inaccurate, inflammatory'

Sen. Marco Rubio scolded Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign over a Spanish-language radio ad that accuses rival Mitt Romney of being “anti-immigrant”

“This kind of language is more than just unfortunate. It’s inaccurate, inflammatory, and doesn’t belong in this campaign,” Rubio told The Miami Herald when asked about the ad.

“The truth is that neither of these two men is anti-immigrant,” Rubio said. “Both are pro-legal immigration and both have positive messages that play well in the Hispanic community.”

Rubio’s sharp rebuke comes a day after he subtly corrected Gingrich for comparing Romney to former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, branded by conservatives as a turncoat who left the party before Rubio beat him in 2010.

The criticisms from someone of Rubio’s stature in the Republican Party comes as polls show a near-even race, albeit with Gingrich surging.

Rubio plans to stay neutral in the race. He’s a potential running mate whom both candidates would love to have on the ballot. And he’s gaining iconic status among many national Republicans who see him as a face of the future in a nation that’s growing more Latino.

Miami, Rubio's hometown, is a key battleground. The candidates are all wooing the Cuban-exile community here, which accounts for nearly three-quarters of the Republican vote in the largest county of the nation’s largest swing state.

Already, about 54,000 early ballots have been cast in Miami Dade, where nearly three-quarters of the Republicans are Hispanic.

Rubio’s statement was fueled by the explosive, partisan debate over immigration, a key issue this election season as both parties aggressively court the Hispanic vote.

Democrats and liberals have tried to paint the Republican candidates as anti-immigrant or even anti-Hispanic for opposing legislation such as the DREAM Act, which provides a path to citizenship for some illegal immigrants – mainly college students and soldiers.

Rubio, who frets that the DREAM Act gives too much “amnesty” to a broader class of immigrants, and other Republicans have accused Democrats of playing rank ethnic politics.

So when Gingrich’s radio spot described Romney as “the most anti-immigrant candidate,” Rubio and others felt he not only crossed the line – he was adopting liberal criticisms.

Hate to put this in all caps, but since no one is doing their homework on Rubio............

RUBIO IS NOT A "NATURAL BORN" CITIZEN AND CAN NOT BE IN THE LINE OF SUCCESSION TO THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

FOR LIBERTY

RON PAUL IS THE GREATEST. OPEN TRADE WITH CUBA, 4000 MILES OF PRISTINE WHITE SAND BEACHES, END THE FED, SOUND MONEY AGAIN. END THE COSTLY AND INHUMANE WARS....

A VOTE FOR OBAMA, ROMNEY, GINGRICH OR SANTORUM IS A VOTE FOR ANOTHER PROGRESSIVE.

LONG LIVE THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION AND LONG LIVE RON PAUL.

If anyone watched the SC debates, you would know that Mitt's solution to illegal Hispanics IN the country was clear: cut off employment by going after employers with huge fines. This would result, according to Mitt, in a "self-deportation" to their country of origin and they could get in the "back of the line" to apply for legal status. Newt offered a plan for existing illegal Hispanics which provided for "guest status" if they had no serious criminal records, had jobs, paid taxes, etc. They could stay in the country while they applied for legal status. It appears to me that Newt recognizes the impossibility of deporting millions of people. I am surprised that Senator Rubio does not see the difference between the positions of the two candidates. Mitt's plan is ultimately very harsh. If he wants Mitt to win Florida, he should come out and support him; otherwise, he would do better to smile and let the chips fall where they may. I do NOT want the Republican "king makers" in Washington, DC to try to rig this process so only a candidate acceptable to them is nominated. We've been down that road. I was fortunate to be one of 6,000 folks who waited 2 hours for Newt to speak recently. No one was disappointed.

Deborah

TimothyDNaegele; Calling Newt names and the threat to vote Obama............... give me a break!!

Newt knows EXACTLY how D.C. works and can undo more damage from past Administrations than the other candidates combined. All the other's are going to look like a Deer in the headlights and spend months learning how things work before they can even get started trying to undo the damage.

Newt is a fighter and will not be bullied by the liberals who have taken this country down the road of un-education with Unionized teachers in the Dept of Education. He won't be bullied by the Environmentalist who have taken over Congress's jobs, the Forest Service, etc.

People; pay no attention to name-callers like TimothyDNaegele who has 1-follower on Twitter, LOL.

I haven't made a final decision yet as to who to support but I am very disturbed by Newt's comments critical of capitalism. They are being used by the foes of capitalism against all of the Republican candidates. His lack of support by reputable conservatives and those who have worked with him are also disturbing. If I were him I would refrain from any comments that appear to be anti-capitalism.

R. Emmett Tyrell of the American Spectator warns us about Newt Gingrich as another Bill Clinton, but shadier. We have to look at history before we pick people, guys. Otherwise, we emotionally pick the best debater, even though he may be a scurrilous tramp. Why go with Gingrich, when Herman Cain had less baggage? And I'm not promoting Cain.

Tyrrell notes that Romney, Santorum and Paul are all men of integrity, and we should consider voting for one of them. I agree. They truly want to fix the country. Newt will go back to his narcissism and end up hurting the Republican party again.

4 more years of Pres Obama would ruin this nation. But 4 years of Newt would likely do the same....

Any politician who will cheat on his or her spouse will not hesitate to screw their constituents. Gingrich is one of these despicable politicians.

MR. ADULTUROR

I cheat on my wife frequently with other women. I LOVED the Clinton years, because he helped me defend my behavior to my wife. It would be so great to have Newt as the president, so once again I can defend my adultery by pointing to the most powerful man in the world. I have yet to hear Mitt Romney tell us what he plans to do in the White House. All he does is attack Gingrich. It has gotten more than old. I think most of us have turned him off.

Where is your substance, Mr. Romney? You are being promoted by the GOP, apparently now which includes Marco Rubio, as a genius. Yet you are not being vetted, just like our current president was not vetted.

Where is your subtance, Mr. Romney? We must see it soon or you are wasting your time and money. All I am seeing is an empty suit.

Linda

Observation, I think we are seeing the end of Marco Rubio. Seriously.

We helped him fight against the GOP who would not support him in his race against Crist. And now he has become one of them. BAD decision, Mr. Rubio.

Apparently being considered for VP has caused you to make some bad choices.

The Tea Parties are watching. You cannot win without their support.

Linda

Norman, you are very astute. This is the Obama campaign all over again.

Same empty suit. Where is Romney's substance? What's he going to do for us? No tough questions being asked of him.

This time he is here will full GOP backing and donors.

Where is the substance?

Thank your RNC Rubio enough said you will never get my vote if you are a vp nominee

Bottom line, Mitt Romney created 120,000 jobs and wealth in small sliver of economy. All the
attacks against him are divert people from that fact. When Romney was creating businesses & Jobs
Newt was setting up shop at Freddie Mac, was lobbing congress for a 11 trillion dollar unpaid
medicare program.

The true Washington outsider isn't named Newt.

linda ramdeholl

Mr.Romney is a gentleman a moral man a man of character as his followers will argue. This election is different the republican nominee will be up against the blatant chicago machine. It will be a plus to have someone with Mr. Gingrich character a little unpredictability is good. Who has a better chance to win a fight a predictable man or an unpredictable man. It is unfair to say Mr.Gingrich should not be nominated this is america. Romney has 100% chance and Gingrich has 100% chance in this race. Mr. Rubio should stay out of this.

Gingrich = 4 more years of Obama . Smarten Up !

Did Romney promise VP to Rubio if Rubio would be his FL attack dog? Sounds like it. I used to like Rubio, but with this BS, I'm going with Newt.

Where is Rick Perry when we need him?

Mark

Senator Rubio. You cannot even help your own constituents when they come to you and ask for your help. My father was exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam. As a result of the agent orange exposure, he ended up with 5 kinds of cancer. The Veterans Administration was a nightmare to deal with and in the end, even though they had given him 100% service connected disability due to his cancer, they refused to pay the other costs associated with his sickness and his death. Costs that the VA has agreed to pay. The VA even declined to pay his life insurance policy because he died of cancer. Cancer that the US Army caused. My dad served in Vietnam and Desert Storm. He spent 31 years in the Army. I called and emailed 8 times over the course of the next 6 months begging Senator Rubio to help me with this issue. I didn't receive one call or one return email. This was the thanks that me and my father got for defending this country. No thanks Mr. Rubio, we don't need or want your advice. You said you weren't getting involved, then don't. If Mr. Romney wanted conservative Floridians to vote for him, he wouldn't have went to Charlie Christ and his people for advice.

xRedfoxx

If we don't unit behind Dr. Ron Paul right now, we are going to remain split and Obama will get another four years.

Bob Pettigrew

A vote for Gingrich in the primary's, is a vote for Obama in the general election in the fall. We republicans have a man of impeccable character running for office, Mitt Romney. If Gingrich is elected, we are going to have another 4 years of a socialistic president. Is that what we want?

Earl P. Holt III

I wish the imbeciles who attack Gingrich would show as much interest in Harrison J. Bounel, the man who "shares" Obama's Social Security Number, and who is listed as the owner of the Obama's home on Green Ave. in Chicago, which they purchased at 1/4 market value from mobster Tony Rezko, who is in federal prison...

While they're at it, they might ask why Michelle had to "surrender" her law license to the Illinois Bar only four years after receiving it.

In contrast to the above, I don't care if Gingrich physiqued a goat...

Linda

Comments here are being blocked. Very bad campaign strategy, Mitt and Marco. Big mistake.

Marco should never have gotten involved in this mess and Romney has yet to tell us what he will do.

I don't want a President with Wall Street backing and experience, I want one who will work for the people. This one won't and apparently neither will Rubio.

NoMoreKoolAid

If Newt wins the nomination, the fall season will be all about Newt and his folly - the voters won't hear through the noise how truly horrible Obama has been for this country.
How he has outlawed any abstinence teaching in school, how he is taking more power away from the local schools and regulating the church's more. How he is spending us into oblivion!
Vote the ONLY TRUE conservative, Rick Santorum. Strong on family, strong on Veterans, Strong on Defense and REALLY strong on the economy! Go to see him before you decide. Let's let Rick debate Obama and Newt debate Biden! That's a winning ticket!

ZOO

Gingrich is gambling that Mexicans can outnumber pro-immigration enforcement voters at the polls. Perhaps if the country was made of of ignorant South Carolinians, this might be the case; but I wouldn't count on it.

Michael Rizzuti

Dear Marco,

congratulations on your continued and rapidly escalating move to be co-opted by the establishment. Such a disappointment.

Scotty

Please everyone, let's keep our eye on the ball. First off, we have to defeat Obama at any cost - period. We don't have a perfect candidate either. They both have weaknesses AND many strengths. But it's going to be either Mitt or Newt, like it or not. Personally I'm for Newt. I like his conservative passion, ideas, and moxy about taking the fight to Obama and giving no quarter. I like him over Mitt because I think he'll keep on swinging after Obama says "uncle". Newt will be ruthless. Right now I love that type of aggression against the inexperienced community agitator who has done nothing in his career except hurt America in every possible way he and his band of leftists can possibly do. Mitt has some passion but not quite enough.

However, whoever gets the nom, Mitt or Newt, I am behind them 100%. I wish they'd both simmer down on each other and direct their justified anger toward the teleprompter boy!

Riquin

Obviously Rubio hit a nerve in calling out yet another slander by Gingrich, whose been reduced to "he's just like Crist" insults in response to the devastating truth: Newt's a Freddie Mac 30K/mo "historian" who been all over the map ideologically.

The difference is is that Romney's attacks are true. Newt is no conservative and is hardly an "outsider". He's lived in and around K-Street for 20 years. He supported a Federal Mandate, and AGW. He attacked Paul Ryan's plan, and had his hand out for the moola.

So you hate that the "establishment" candidate can win. So what? You'd rather lose? Because that's what you're getting if you pick Gingrich. Santorem is the only real social conservative left. Ron Paul is the only real conservative. But Romney can win, and winning is more important than the fleeting satisfaction of watching your candidate embarrass Obama in a couple of debates that most voters will never watch.

Marco Rubio has been wined & dined by the GOP NeoCon establishment from the day he went to his Senate Office in Washington. I'm sure they made him feel like they had great future plans for him ..... as long as he played on their team and goes along to get along. The nomination campaign is not between Republicans and Democrats. It's between the the RINO NeoCons who have controlled the GOP leadership for decades and the silent majority of conservative Americans represented by the Tea Party. Rubio needs to decide whose side he is on and better not forget that it was the Tea Party that voted him to the Senate. He CAN be replaced if his personal ambitions forget that he'd better dance with those that took him there.

Clay Moore

I get a big laugh when I read self-described "Independents" promote the RINO Romney campaign. Why do NeoCons persist in trying to pass themselves off as Independent?

In 1992, Mitt Romney was running Bain Capital, a private equity firm. Bain Capital bought American Pad & Paper Co. (Ampad) for $5 million. Over the next several years Romney's firm bled the company dry. Hundreds of workers lost their jobs. Stockholders were left with
worthless shares. Creditors and vendors were paid less than 50 cents on the dollar. While they were exploiting the company, Romney's firm charged Ampad millions of dollars in "management fees." In all, Romney and his investors reaped more than $100 million dollars from the deal. Bane Capital practices "Prey Enterprise" & "Cancer Capitalism".

They enrich themselves on the misery of others. Ask yourself why is
the Romney RINO machine spending millions attacking fellow Republicans and not Obama. Do you really believe that Mitt who is worth $270 Million wants a job that only pays $400 thousand a year? He's no patriot, so why does he want to control the U.S. Treasury? Anyone?

Does anyone on Romney's campaign staff have a brain? Are they so naive to think that by incessant personal attacks on Gingrich and the others will change anyone's mind? Romney is the handpicked front man for the GOP establishment that has corrupted the meaning of the term Conservative. LOL

We need four more years of Obama. All of the republican candidates represent big business and the one percent.
They won't do anything for the middle class. The previous republican disaster under Bush only hurt our country.

Obama will save this country. Vote for him.

The GOP Elitist Establishment has declared an all out war against Newt Gingrich. If Gingrich wins the Florida primary you will see
a panic and a meltdown of the Republican establishment that is beyond description.

The Neoconservatives and those "Republicans In Name Only" will go crazy and you will have this five week period until the Super Tuesday states which is going to be as unpredictable, tumultuous as any period in modern American politics. It will be a remarkable thing to watch should that happen in Florida.

Today in a coordinated "Blitzkrieg" the GOP media lackeys and sycophants including Elliott Abrams, R. Emmett Tyrrell, Matt Drudge, Ann Coulter, George Will, Bob Dole and Tom DeLay lambasted Gingrich with attack after attack of demagoguery and contempt.

Even Marco Rubio chirped recent criticisms directed toward Gingrich. Has Rubio sold out the

"Most people on Capitol Hill and in Washington are very nervous about
a Gingrich candidacy." "It sends a shiver down the spines of
a lot of the Establishment Republican Leadership."
"You can actually feel the nervousness from the GOP around town that
a Gingrich victory could actually bring about the transfer of power from the current inbred, incestuous GOP leadership to the members of The Tea Party and the millions of the silent majority of voters who support them.

Clay Moore

Ronald Reagan’s eldest son Mike Reagan has issued a statement lambasting Mitt Romney and his supporters for claims that Romney’s Republican presidential rival Newt Gingrich was a strong critic of President Reagan.

Reagan says such claims are false.

Even Rush Limbaugh, shocked by the Romney claims, chimed on his Thursday radio broadcast to say "This is obviously a coordinated attack to take Newt out here in Florida."

Rush slammed the Romney-backed smear campaign against Newt.

“That kind of stuff is why people hate Romney so much," Limbaugh said.

Limbaugh added that Newt has always been a conservative from his early days in national talk radio in the 1980s.

“He was perhaps the premier defender of Ronald Reagan,” Limbaugh said.

“I am deeply disturbed that supporters of Mitt Romney are claiming that Newt Gingrich is not a true Reaganite and are even claiming that Newt was a strong critic of my father.

“Recently I endorsed Newt Gingrich for president because I believe that Newt is the only Republican candidate who has both consistently backed the conservative policies that my father championed and the only Republican that will continue to implement his vision.

“It surprises me that Mitt Romney and his supporters would raise this issue — when Mitt by his own admission voted for Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale who opposed my father, and later supported liberal Democrat Paul Tsongas for president.

“As governor of Massachusetts, Romney’s achievement was the most socialistic healthcare plan in the nation up until that time.

It amazes me all the negative ads that politicians approve to damage their competitions creditably. What's even more amazing is that they continue to release these campaigns. This most me that it works to a degree. It's totally unprofessional to bad month your competition but in politics it's common practice.
