We're a day late in posting this story by David Ovalle:
Miami-Dade prosecutors on Thursday arrested the husband, son and sister of Opa-Locka Mayor Myra Taylor for allegedly conspiring to cover-up more than $6,000 in illegal campaign contributions to her November 2010 election campaign.
According to authorities, the money was funneled through the Taylor family’s private school, Vankara, and New Beginnings, a company run from the family’s church.
The mayor herself was not arrested because prosecutors did not have enough evidence to link her to the alleged crimes.
Charged Thursday: husband John Taylor, son Demetrius “Corleon” Taylor and sister Elvira Smith. They are charged with making and accepting excessive campaign contributions, tampering with evidence and conspiring to violate election codes.
According to an arrest warrant, checks from Vankara — funded by government grants and private tuition — paid $6,000 to a company called Graphic Images for the cost of printing campaign materials. The family’s company, New Beginnings, also paid $783.93 for a political mailer.
Local campaign contributions are supposed to max out at $500.
