State Rep. Mike Horner, R-Kissimmee, was named this morning in a racketeering-prostitution investigation, leading him to resign.
His name will remain on the ballot, but a vote for him will be a vote for a designee chosen by the Republican Party of Florida. Democrat Eileen Game is running for the seat.
I deeply regret decisions I made that are causing my family unjustifiable pain and embarrassment. While current press accounts from this morning are erroneous, my family still deserves better from me, as do all my friends, supporters and constituents.
So today, I am announcing I will no longer seek reelection to the Florida House.
I’ve had no greater honor than serving the people of Florida, but I have no greater priority than doing the right thing for my family. I pray to have the chance to earn back their trust and respect during the remainder of my life.
Horner, president of the Kissimmee/Osceola Chamber of Commerce, served in the Florida National Guard from 1992 to 1996. He's married and has a young son. Elected in 08, Horner was well-liked by his colleagues for his friendly demeanor and hard-working style. He was likely going to be chosen to be the House budget chairman.
