Voting open for Florida license tags

Floridians can now go to Vote4FloridaTag.com to vote for their favorite license tags.

The most popular selection will be the state's official plate, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

The state hopes to upgrade the plates by 2014 to include more characters (Florida is running out of combinations) and make them more legible for red light cameras and toll booths.

The four competing tags were created by in-house designers, said Kirsten Olsen-Doolan, spokeswoman for the department.

The license plate redesigns were embroiled in dispute this October after tax collectors protested a move by Highway Safety Chief Julie Jones to outsource tags' online and mail sales to private companies. Jones decided to proceed with the redesign but stall on the outsourcing while the state gets information on whether privatizing could save money, Olsen-Doolan said, adding that the decision on whether to outsource has no deadline.

"The outsourcing and redesign came up at the same time, but we decided to separate those issues," Olsen-Doolan said. "We'll have an idea whether we'll (privatize) when we have hard information on what options will offer an advantage over others."
