The day in cannabis: Medical marijuana group rebrands, Pew poll shows majority want legalization

@MarcACaputo

Two developments on the marijuana front today, one in Florida and one nationally.

The group People United for Medical Marijuana (PUFMM, get it?) is rebranding its effort to put medical marijuana on the ballot. Its new website: United for Care. The group is now being led by Florida trial attorney John Morgan and Ben Pollara, a top Democratic fundraiser. Libertarian and former Republican Roger Stone gives it a bipartisan feel. Coming soon: More Republicans to give it a multi-partisan flavor.

Nationally, the Pew Research Center release a poll showing that national attitudes toward marijuana are trending greener by the day:

"For the first time in more than four decades of polling on the issue, a majority of Americans favor legalizing the use of marijuana. A national survey finds that 52% say that the use of marijuana should be made legal while 45% say it should not.

"Support for legalizing marijuana has risen 11 points since 2010. The change is even more dramatic since the late 1960s. A 1969 Gallup survey found that just 12% favored legalizing marijuana use, while 84% were opposed."

Two years ago, Gallup found a "record high" number of Americans favored legalizing it, 50%. And more than 64% percent of Americans, according to another Gallup poll, say the federal government shouldn't enforce federal anti-pot laws in the places where marijuana has been decriminalized.

Floridians aren't quite ready to say they're for outright decriminalization, according to the last poll paid for by PUFFM. But the poll indicates Floridians think it should be treated more like a speeding ticket than  a lock-em-up crime.

That poll, however, did indicate that more than 7 in 10 Florida voters favored medical marijuana. That link is here. Two years ago, about 6 in 10 favored medical marijuana in Florida. That link is here.

What's the Florida Legislature doing in the face of increasing public support? It's refusing to even hear bills to allow for medical marijuana. The issue doesn't even merit a vote. But the Legislature is hearing a measure to stop the sale of bongs.

On that note, we'll leave you with one last poll number: 52% of Florida voters disapprove of the job the Legislature is doing and only 25% approve, according to Quinnipiac University's last survey.

When will our Government finally realize it can profit more from taxing the sale of the harmless medicinal herb than by jailing people for it? It is so good to see groups are organizing all over the country to speak their minds on reforming pot laws and defending this plant. Public opinion is finally swaying toward legalization from such efforts! I drew up a very cool poster for the cause featuring Uncle Willie Nelson which you can check out on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/01/vote-teapot-2011.html Drop in and let me know what you think!

Hi Marc,

I recently heard a snippet on the news mentioning something about this. I am glad that you covered it so concisely.

Clearly the People of Florida are not voicing their opinion of the matter to legislature directly. That, or like the poll, about State legislature, mentioned at the end of this blog may otherwise suggest, they are being ignored on the subject altogether.

Many retirees come to Florida to enjoy its great natural beauty and mild to nearly non-existent winters. Unfortunately, the case is that with old age also comes ailments. Many of which can be alleviated or managed completely with administration of Medical Marijuana.

I don't doubt that there are lobbyists working against Medical Marijuana legislation even now as it becomes so obvious the majority is for it. Perhaps some use christian indignation, I ask them to open their book and read Genesis 1:29. Any other objections need to take a good look at what decriminalization has done in Portugal.

As a State and as a Nation, We cannot afford to lock up a large portion of our population simply for how they choose to medicate. Remediation rather than incarceration is successful, Portugal is proof of that. Our jails our jam packed with non-violent drug offenders while violent criminals are released short of their sentencing length due to overpopulation in our prisions. The fact is. It costs taxpayers more money to house one inmate for a year than many of us earn honestly in a years time. How can that budget balance? US Prisons are big business. How much more money until the War on drugs is won? That also is a needless battle with only death and profits, for a few, as a result.

The Republicans have proven to be nothing but hate mongers who want to fill our prisons up and then have private prisons get take over. It's all about lining their pockets. They should have all been aborted-the world would be a better place without them.

America is goin to pot and more groups want in on the action: http://jefffadness.blogspot.com/2013/04/national-he-pew-research-center-did.html ...

Redundant

Mr. Schott, When I want your religion or your direction on how I live my life, I will ask for it. 'Land of the Free' does not mean ruled over by the nanny state from birth to death. God gave us free choice. God did not intend for that free choice to be usurped by the self righteous.

I've emailed my state reps several times and have gotten responses.

They just play the whole "it's against federal law/it's schedule 1 according to the CS Act" song and disregard whatever scientific/political evidence brought up.

Then again we have ALOT of prisons in FL.

I think medical marijuana should be legalized through the nation. especially for people who are sick with cancer and other diseases medications that we take make a sick throwing up all the time is not fun. and especially if you're younger and you have children you can't even take care of your children because you're too sick to. the main reason we want it is because it makes you have appetite and makes you feel better and not throw up. and for pain such as arthritis lupus are autoimmune diseases. if you can put an over the counter abortion pill out for 17 year olds? Then what harm is pot?
