"Chicken Charlie" Crist draws fire in gun-control web video

As former Gov. Charlie Crist appears ready to announce a bid for his old job, the Republican-turned-independent-turned-Democrat has a target on his back for his old positions.

Especially guns.

Once A-rated by the NRA, Crist no longer will be. The gun lobby will back Gov. Rick Scott. But Crist also appears to be taking fire from progressives, including this new group,, that just posted this "Chicken Charlie" video:

After posting this, we got the press release:

Hollywood, Florida – A group of Florida voters confused by Charlie Crist’s shifting positions as he has evolved from Republican to Democrat will stage an action outside the Florida Democratic Party’s annual Jefferson-Jackson dinner tomorrow, Saturday, June 15, to demand clarity from Crist on guns and gun control.

Over his 20 years as an elected Republican official, including his four years as governor, Crist consistently earned A ratings from the National Rifle Association, proclaimed himself a diehard defender of gun rights and often lambasted election rivals as too soft on gun rights.

Shortly after becoming a Democrat last December, however, Crist said he was now in favor of “some restrictions” in the wake of the elementary school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, including limits on magazine sizes. More on Crists’ record here.

He has not elaborated on his position since, raising all sorts of questions about gun policy in Florida – the controversial Stand Your Ground law, or the “Docs vs. Glocks” provision barring pediatricians from asking questions about guns in the home. Those questions are becoming more pressing as Crist seeks to convince loyalists in his new party that he deserves the nomination to challenge Governor Rick Scott in the fall.

“You can’t stand your ground on both sides of the fence,” longtime Florida activist Jack Lieberman said today. “Where are you Charlie Crist?”

The demonstration will start at 5:30 p.m. outside the Westin Diplomat hotel in Hollywood.

The activists are also releasing a short video at that tells the story of Crist’s gun record, available here.
